Iphone Anchor Drag App?

#1 Post by Mosnowman » Sat Sep 29, 2012 6:52 pm

So I'm looking in the App store or an anchor drag app for my iphone and there are many many choices. Does anyone here have one they would recommend? Thanks!

I had not thought of that but a great idea. I looked thru the App Store but most are tied to GPS which left on runs your battery down in about two hours unless plugged into the toons power.
I didn't find one that I liked, most are expensive. Which ones are you looking at?

I'll see if I can find out. I remember some guys talking about one on the Florida Sportsman forum a while back.

Just tie a big rope around your iPhone, and drop it over the edge.

You want a really BIG rope, so there's no hope of it actually HOLDING your iPhone. Just let it drop to the bottom. It won't hold your boat in place, but at least you won't have to worry about that iPhone any more.

Then go home, and buy an Android phone.

No, as a child, it was my older sister hitting me on the head with a hammer. Since then, yeah, pretty much 55 years of continuous cranial contusions and impacts. Not to mention the damage from the inside, with continuous ethanol purging of the weak brain cells.

Hey, I'm a programmer. My favorite OS at home is Linux. 'Droid = Linux. I love the idea of a phone I can write my own apps for.

iAnything is the debbil to me. I really, really don't like Apple's philosophy of "release it now, and fix it next release".

But can you name a single commercially available cellphone carrier provided Android phone that you would not have to root in order to either gain access to the base system or install the latest version of Android?

The one at my desk right now, ATT provided HTC Vivid is running
4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich (released 10/2011)
not
4.1.x Jelly Bean (released 7/2012)

So while iForgot to test it may not get it right the first time, you do get it as soon as they release it. The cellphone carriers are preventing you from even getting the latest Android OS because they have not had the opportunity to 'brand' it or limit its functionallity yet, unless you root it thereby voiding your contract with them and possibly the handset manufacturer as well.

At least they are making some sort of releases, do we even know if Blackberry has a pulse any more?

FWIW, my Blackberry Playbook (tablet) is running OS 2.0.1.668 based off QNX and has an Android App player built in to it. With minor tweaks to the standard Android apps it will use/play them. The exceptions are any app that requires cell towers or GPS for location services.

Also, MacOS is currently built on NEXTStep and BSD. I thought you'd (heart) the iProducts...and not to hurt your feeling any more, but...

it is linux too.. :eviltaunt just jailbreak and go. Looks like people have been working on the process for jailbreaking iOS6, but I'd still give it another month or so before the process is perfected, so if you are going with an iPhone stick with 5.0.

So everything old is new again, back to the KDE vs Gnome desktop battle...

I despise Apple and everything they produce because of their marketing philosophy, not for technical reasons. Although I once installed iTunes on a Windoze box, and had to reformat the hard drive to get rid of it. I can write and deploy android apps without having to root my droid phone...although I probably WILL root my phone, because I can!

I don't despise any of them, I let my employees chose whatever rope they like to hang themselves.

I am interested in learning which app people are using on their iProducts. I would assume a iPad2 with cellular data plan would be able to use the same app?

I picked up my iPhone 5 Saturday and so far it is everything I need it be. So while y'all fight over which is best or worst I am having fun with mine. It is a lot faster than the 3GS I used to have. :nana :nana :nana

From the iTunes Store I set mine so that any apps I download to my phone or iPad goes to the other device. So yes most if not all apps are available on iPhone or iPad.

Get Drag Queen - it's free, simple, and is written by real boating folks. Android and I Phone.

From these guys...

December 2011

>>> DragQueen >>>
You might say the timing worked out well on this to provide a small
Christmas gift to the ActiveCaptain community. Actually, it was
just happenstance that Apple approved our new free app this week
but we're happy to take some holiday credit.

Back in September, Jeff grew unhappy with the anchor alarm choices
available for the various smartphones, especially the iPhone. Over a
weekend at Olverson's he whipped up a prototype of a very simple
alarm that provided the things we wanted at night to watch over us.
It was quite a funny scene to see him set the alarm and then walk
the docks to simulate pulling back and eventually dragging anchor.

Then we did an unusual thing. Before submitting the app for release,
we actually used the alarm every night for the 2 months we were
anchored out along the Chesapeake and on our way to Florida. Every
couple of days he'd be clicking at the keyboard, tweaking the software
to provide something a little different. Then more nights at anchor.
The sound had to be just right to be incredibly annoying. That alone
proceeded through dozens of "listen to this!" samples. And of course
it needed to be tested with very tight distances on windy nights so
the alarm would actually go off. Never before had I seen him wake up
at 3 am to an alarm with a smile.

Now that we're in Jacksonville, we finished up the app. Added help,
licenses, app store magic, and submitted it all to Apple. Surprisingly,
Apple approved it in just 2 days. Plenty of time to give it out
for Christmas.

The app is free and available right now in the app store. We intend
on providing the source code to it once the Android version is
complete with the hopes that others will use it, extend it, and make
it even better. Yes, there is an Android version coming from the exact
same source code but it needs some user-interface auto-configuration
code. We'll write an update newsletter item when it's available -
please don't write us about it (you're only delaying its completion!).

Grab the app. It's free now and will remain free forever. We hope
you find it useful. It's name is a play on words and called DragQueen.
May she stand careful watch over all your nights at anchor...
