went today to get my oil to change in my Merc. 115 4-stroke outboard......damn, I know petroleum products are up, but Mercury sure is proud of this oil, 25W-40....$10 per quart!! This is actually the Quicksilver brand also AND at the local Wallmarket. I'd hate to see how much a dealer wants!
Question, any ideas of where else to get this? I went to a couple of automotive stores and the only thing close was 20W-50.
I look in my owners manual again, and it doesn't state any other grade as suitable, has anyone ever used any other grade? I'm not too willing to try it as mines only 4 years old but just wondering.
Sad story short, I've got the oil now, guess I'm ready for my $70 + oil change.....and that's me doing it!
Oh, side note, I did see on Overtons they have the Quicksilver 25W-40 at $6........here's the catch.......it's on back order, very funny MF'ers!
Thanks for listening, I had to get that off my chest and out there, the wife just doesn't get it or she ignores it. I feel a little better now.

The place to get educated on motor oil is at BobIsTheOilGuy.com
You can read about oils and lubrication for hours, and they specifically address motor oils for marine use. Opinions on what brand and weights of oil to use is all over the gambit.
Obviously, Mercury and Yamaha don't make oils--contracting for oils with their name on the bottles. And OEM oils and oil filters have the manufacturers' double profits tacked on.
On a 2 stroke, I would probably use the OEM oil as long as it was under factory warranty.
I just completed my first oil change using Shell Rotella 15W40 diesel oil and an AC/Delco oil filter. They're both perfectly adequate. After the next oil change, I'm considering going to Mobil 1.

I've been using Pennsoil Platimun synthetic since the second oil change in my Honda. A buddy I used to work with gets me the Honda oil filters from the dealer (cost) for less than 4 bucks. The dealer wanted 10 bucks for the filters. Once the brand name goes on the stuff, the price goes up.

I paid $23 for non-Yamaha oil/filter/lower unit grease. I'm going to fill up my tank this week with 100% gasoline and add a fuel additive--the extent of my winterizing.
When it comes to filters, oil and lower unit grease, manufacturers are essentially another middleman that require payment.
The Yamaha OEM filter is the same as a Fram PH4967 filter, and it's used on Pontiacs, New Hollands, Kubotas, Walker zero turn mowers, Lotus cars, Lexus, Kohler, Kawasaki, Husquvarna, Cub Cadet, Briggs & Stratton, and Agco. There are over 200 different oil filters that cross reference to the Yamaha parts Number 69J-13440-00-00.
Obviously, car/tractor/ATV/motorcycle mechanical engineers spec out their motors for use with existing high volume oil filters available at national chain auto parts stores for very low prices. They're just painted their colors and with their graphics. I think you'll find the same with OEM oils at both marine and automobile/truck dealerships.
In the oil world, Mobil 1 is very highly regarded. Some don't use it for marine use because it doesn't have marine ratings. Realistically, a very small percentage of Mobil 1 sales are used in boats, and it's quite expensive to have the oil tested for the marine ratings. It's the same with many other great brands of motor oil. BobIsTheOilGuy.com is a great source of reading about such subjects as marine oils and lubricants.
