KY Lake - Recs for anchor(s)?

#1 Post by landlockedsailor » Wed Dec 19, 2012 8:31 am

Newbie here again, putting together my list list of To Gets...

What type of anchor would you recommend for tooning on KY Lake? We plan on anchoring in coves but might do some fishing in the larger parts of the lake.

Recs for chain length, line length to have on board? Also, are you using drift socks when fishing but not anchored? Thanks all!

Ky Lake is a muddy bottom lake, I use a fluke style anchor, I have 100' of line but have never used near that. The lake is fairly shallow, many places of 10' and some area's possibly less except for the 2 channels that run on each west and east sides, but they're not extremely wide, but they can be 30+ feet deep. I don't fish much there but have seen many people fishing the channels. Back in the coves you will not see much over 10' deep and getting pretty shallow the deeper in the cove you get and near the shore. I am speaking for during "summer pool" they do raise and lower the lake by 5', summer to winter. During winter pool, things get real shallow in places.

Talk to people around were your at or ask here, you really need to be carefull in "some" places and especially during winter pool.

From your previous post it sounds like you are near by where we keep our camper (BeeSpring campground), do you have a house down there? The Cozy Cove resort is nearby too, I'm assuming your in that area.

Walter, yes we're here in Cozy Cove. I think Bee Creek is just up from here, we're on West Bee Creek. Looking forward to learning how to fish and if you have any good spots to recommend, please do!

When we rented pontoon boat over at Turtle Bay on vacation, they gave us a round-bottom anchor (name?) with MAYBE 8" of line. Fortunately no wind in the cove we fished in so we didn't drift into shore. Great fishing tho, caught some good bass which we ate for dinner.

Thanks for the rec on the fluke anchor, etc. I read on anther thread about attaching an anchor holder/plate on the outside of the rails. He was using a fluke anchor too in his pics.

I never anchored on the Miss River, though I had a fluke for the sailboat. The only time I was anchored, I was tied up to the other sailboat using his anchor - on the river but not in the channel. A fisherman cut the anchor line and I woke up when our bow sprits slammed into a lock/dam piling after drifting downriver 1/2 mile. So, not a good experience so far with anchoring. I expect to remedy that this spring - but I want to get it right so I'm studying up.

Thanks again!

I fish quite a bit and I use two anchors , a box anchor that I had made and a "digger" brand anchor. Love the digger anchor but its pricey. The toon is gonna catch a lot of wind so it will benefit you to learn about anchoring and that will help. When I'm fishing I want it to "stick", I don't want to drift any cause it screws up your lines if you are tight lining it.
I used to use one in the front and one out the back, but this way would allow the boat to "sway" back and forth too much.
I use a "T' method now- basically I point my nose into the wind and have the lines straight out to the left and right,
A "Y' method minimizes the sway but when you get the t working for you it cuts down a lot a swaying unless the wind is coming from different directions.
Drop the first anchor and back up to go across the wind, when you get far as you want the anchors to be apart, drop the 2nd anchor, when it hits the bottom, start pulling the first anchor rope till you get in about the middle, then tie one of them, then pull the other till it gets tight and tie it off, once you are there the boat should just sit there and not sway any, You want the nose of the boat to be pointed straight into the wind when you get anchored.
Here is a link on the digger anchor on you tube, not very exciting but it shows how it works-They recommend a 5 to 1 rope length `bit I haven't had to use that much- I think that depends on the type bottom you are fishing.

For drifting I have been through a few drift socks but when the winds pick up I could never slow down enough until i bought this--

I bought the 5xl size and it works great, seems durable and should last a while.
i hope this helps, This is just what has worked for me--
