Thinking about moving there in the not too distant future for retirement. Anyone know about lakes in the area where my Toon and I would be happy ?

Well, depends on where you come from.
I come from Colorado Springs where the lakes are small and cold.
To me, the local lakes are pretty darn nice here in our area.
I boat about 90% of the time at Lake Murray but that is 78 miles away from you.
I find it relatively clean and warm in the summer. It's quite large and will give you a lot of area to boat. I cannot speak of the lakes closer to you.

I am from Pa. and my toon is in the Pocono mountains,so boating is from May 15th to Sept. 15th in Lake Wallenpauck. A move to Spartanburg will be a warm one for me. Just thought there might be someone on the forum from that area that could help.
From what I can tell with Google maps,there are a couple of lakes in the area,but nothing can compare with first hand knowledge.

You've got Bowen Lake north of Spartanburg, but it's a small lake @ 1500 acres. Most of the bigger lakes are west of Greenville around Anderson and Seneca/Clemson.

Lake Keowee is north of Seneca, and it's an 18,000 acre, deep lake.

Lake Hartwell is over on the GA state line approx. 50 miles west of Spartanburg. It's huge @ 56,000 acres and almost 1000 miles of shoreline.

I don't know if your house hunt is specifically limited to Spartanburg. But there are many absolutely lovely towns in the Greenville area and to the west and northwest of there. There are some planned golf communities in the area that are absolutely incredible. Gary Player liked the NW SC area so well that he moved his whole golf course architectural firm there. The area is just big enough in population, but not too big. And the mountains to the north are absolutely incredible.

And from Greenville to Atlanta proper is just 135 miles.

Many thanks for the info. We are going to the Spartanburg area the weekend of the 19th too look around. At this point,nothing is written in stone,we are just looking. I believe we both need a bit warmer and more boat friendly climate. Not really interested in Florida,great boating weather ,but not very " finances friendly " at least not in my case.

Have you looked at North Carolina? We're on Lake Norman which is 35,000 acres and the weather is pretty good for most of the year. It's supposed to be close to 70 this weekend. We're transplanted from New Jersey.

If you have no reason to live in Spartanburg, look over by Clemson where the lakes are. Most people prefer Greenville and west going toward Anderson.

Housing is reasonable, and it's a really nice place to live. NW SC has a very good society in about every way.

When I lived in NW Atlanta, I traveled the area for work.

Be sure to check out Lake Norman, I bet you can find a deal on a nice lake house,but be warned the commuter car traffic around Lake Norman can be a nightmare,Lake Norman is REAL nice! all the yankees want to live on the lake. Also check out Lake Wylie,NC/SC Belmont,NC,River Hills,SC and Gaston County no serious traffic problems and really nice people. River Hills, SC has a super nice marina and all sizes of house from big ones to condos and is not crowded. We live in Gastonia and boat on Lake Wylie,we're 15 minutes from our wet slip at Harbor Town Marina in Belmont,NC. Gastonia is a real nice red neck town,you get a lot of house for the money and close to sin city (Charlotte,NC).

Thanks for all the info. Although born and raised here,I have been called a redneck for as long as I can remember. I guess it's a state of mind. I wish all those yankees would stay at home.

Not familiar with Spartanburg, but you need to check out the Anderson area. Access to two great lakes, Keowee and Hartwell. I live in Atlanta and have a weekend place on Hartwell. Keowee is nice, deep with clear water but very expensive lots. Hartwell is bigger, more reasonable prices, but you have take into consideration the ups and downs of the lake level.
