Tow Vehicle MPG Question... Herb? Anyone?

Diesel mileage question...

A friend of mine has a new Dodge Ram 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel. He tows various things with it, not just a pontoon. One trailer he tows a lot is about 18,000 lb GVW. What mileage do you think he should see with the Cummins pulling that load on the freeway, cross country? It's not the most aerodynamic trailer around.

Thanks.

Well it he didn't have the 6.7, I would say 14 MPG, that's what I got pulling a 16 foot enclosed trailer with 9000 pounds inside at 70 MPH, but the 6.7 doesn't get the fuel mileage I get ,so I say he would be around 11 MPG, still not bad for a 7000 pound 4x4.

I have a 2008 2500 4x4 Dodge with 6sp manual we have a 26 ft 5th w camper and a 22ft beachcomber toon pulling the two at the same time on the flats @55-60 mph we got 15 -18 mpg , a tad too long if we get stopped .

Yep, slowing it down, ups the fuel mileage big time, I get 19 MPG if I stay at or below 2100 RPM or 75 MPG in my truck without a load

Thank you, gentlemen! He's been getting about 10 mpg, and thought he should be getting 12 to 14 mpg. That big diesel is thirsty.

The 6.7 uses fuel to burn off the soot in the Diesel Particulate Filter too, the newer ones you have to buy DPF fluid for them when you fuel up, so you don't get the mileage out of them, I know one guy who owns a dealership in just moves his old 5.9 engine he has souped up into a newer truck every year.

Now if he is in an area where he is not being inspected he can do a DPF delete and improve his MPG's a bunch, he can get ahold of my buddy Tony at MightyDiesel.com, he will fix him up with what he needs
