Do you need to bottom paint every year

Every year when I get the boat out the boat dealer says I should get 2 coats of bottom paint. I keep it in salt water and haven't had any issiues. I am just tired of paying high prices if my paint is ok. Do you think it really needs 2 coats every year?

What do you suppose two coats of bottom paint WEIGHS?
5 years and it sinks from the weight.

No it doesn't need two coats every year. The most would be every other year and you should get three years. Sounds like they just want to pad their pockets.
As far as the weight, if they are doing it right they will strip most of the old paint off beford repainting.
Couldn't hurt to touch up spots annually, but two complete coats is overkill.

Sounds like he's got a boat that he needs to make payments on and you're going to help him.

Put a first coat on in a contrasting color. Put the second coat on in the final color. When the first coat contrasting color starts to show through - time to recoat the outer color again.

I don't even know if they removed old layers if not I have 10 coats of paint and I can wait a few years. The emailed me back the prices for this year. I don't have a trailer so I can't bring it home to work on it.
Spring Start - $103
Bottom Paint - $320 for one coat, $480 for 2 coats
Painting Motor bracket/ LU $65
Painting Transducer $20
Launch $97

That's actually pretty cheap. The first time mine was painted, I let the marina do it. I paid $1200.
Painting the transducer ?? These should never be painted....unless they mean just the bracket.

If that was with 2 coats of the epoxy primer and 2 coats of bottom that might not be so bad, I painted mine last spring, it was a big job labor wise, prepping the bare logs for the epoxy.
Just trying to save a buck doing it myself, I've always painted our previous glass boats, but toon logs are a different beast.
Looking back, I would have had the dealership do it before I picked it up.

That's what I have on the hulls now. Unfortunately, the previous owner did not.

did the logs pit, or did the barrier coat prevent that?
did you have to strip the previous paint?
bummer.

I've seen a few 'toons turned to swiss cheese when some dumb ass used copper. One guy in here a few years back bought a 'toon that leaked like a sieve and we all told him to take it back to his dealer.
He never posted if he did or not
I had mine done the year I bought it and painted myself ever since.

Worse than pitting I actually had a few spots that had to be welded with a patch. The previous owner used a copper based paint desifned for fiberglass boats. It had to all be removed, patched weak and pitted areas, two base coats of primer, and then two coats of trilux 33.
