First time out and motor not working right

#1 Post by peedee » Thu May 30, 2013 3:14 pm

It is a Yamaha 50hp 2 stroke. In neutral it revs fine. In forward it stops at 2000rpm's like a rev limiter is kicking in. Anyone know what I should check. Put new plugs, new fuel water separater.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Is the fuel filter clean? Kink in hose? Plugged vent?

If the carbs are messed up, does it still work in neutral? It stays at 2000 rpm as a safety issue for the motor.

When I first bought my toon the mobile mechanic recommended I put a new fuel line on as it was an attwood and he just said he preferred that be a factory item.
I didn't because it looked fine to me.
It did idle fine but underway it would sometimes "choke out" or at least choke down.
After fuel treatments and other things I stopped at a local boat mechanic and he told me it didn't sound like carbs, he thought it was a fuel line problem.
I bought the factory fuel line and NEVER a problem since.
Don't know about yours but that was my experience.
I often wonder if Jimmy really did crack corn, and why should I care?
