1999 SunTracker w/40hp Force Tach stopped working?

#1 Post by GoFastr » Mon Jun 10, 2013 8:36 am

It (1999 Force 40hp) overheated on me a month ago (impeller shredded) and since then the Teleflex tach stopped working. Motor runs fine now no problems (knock on wood). Nothing obvious with the wiring and all the fuses are fine. Did notice the (new) battery leaks down voltage now over the course of about two weeks requiring me to use a jump box for the initial startup. After that volt gauge indicates a solid 13.5-14 volt charge and will restart all day long no problems. The setting on the back of the gauge is right and has never been touched really, and all the wiring connectors etc underneath the dash look fine and clean.

Barring not having stumbled across a burnt (gray) wire somewhere, could this be a regulator problem or a stator problem? Where is the tach getting it's signal from?

BTW as a side note, when I turn the key to the on position the tach needle will move slightly indicating there's an indication of power from somewhere. Is it powered by something other than the regulator or stator?

Parts these old Force motors are getting more scarce every day.

I have a similar issue I found this...
