My gas tank sits on the floor inside the railing where it's easy to fill without needing to bend or reach with a heavy gas can. This works but I don't especially like it sitting in the corner taking up space. The tank mounting tray sits empty on the end of the log but this is opposite of the helm & dock side of the boat. This is all how it was set up when I bought it. If the tank were in the tray I could gas up by temporarily pulling into the dock on the opposite side, then move it to moor on the downwind side. Is this typical or is there another way that doesn't involve trying to fill the tank from the edge of the dock?

I wish there was a tank "filler neck extension" that would allow me to locate the tank out on the log but fill it standing inside the rail.

Others I know who slip their boat bring gas cans and just use a siphon hose to transfer to the tanks. My tank's on the dock side of the boat, so it's easy for me if I need to gas up while out on the water.

My fuel tank is built in and the filler is on the side of the boat. Filling directly from a gas can usually had gas running all down my arms (when filling while boat was on trailer) or into the lake (when filling while boat is tied to the dock). With the jiggle syphon hose, I keep the gas can on the seat at the back of the boat and run the syphon tube into the filler neck on the tank. A few "jiggles" of the syphon tube and the 5-gallons is emptied out of the gas can in just a few minutes -- with not a single drop being spilled.

I keep my boat in a slip and carry gas cans to it. I have thrown away all the filler tubes that come with the "new improved ecologically correct" gas cans and just have a large funnel I stick in the gas filler pipe. Every now and then a drip of gas sloshes out but that beats the several ounces which were spilled using the spill proof spouts invented by some pointed head in Washington.

My easiest-to-fill machine is my zero-turn mower. It has a huge gas cap on the fender over the wheel and about a 3-inch neck down to the tank. I take everything off the gas can & dump 5 gals thru a big-ass funnel in about 45 seconds without missing a drop. Those stupid non-vented cans spit fuel all over my other machines, over over-flow because the "innovative" anti-spill gizmos don't work at all.

But I digress...

So are there regulations that have prevented some enterprising company from designing a long filler neck to replace the screw cap on a portable tank? Or a regulation that prevents me from fabbing one?

I agree with OK Toon's recommendation; I find it easy and without a mess.

I use a big galvanized tractor funnel with a 12" corrigated fill hose. I cut the bottom inch off the hose. And it fits tightly into the vertical filler neck under the fencing tubing.

I'm thinking about adding one of the old style filler overflows in order to make the filler take in gas faster.

And I'm not above hauling two 5 gallon jerry cans 50 yards down to the boat for a net savings of $10.

I have 4 of the 5-gal gas cans that we use to fill up unless the boat is on the trailer and we happen to drive by a gas station on the way someplace. I have only had to stop at the marina and get some gas 1 time -- and never again. I'll carry extra on the boat to save $ from having to buy it on the water.

I have 2, 6 gallon gas cans and I rotate them out. I have connectors on both cans so I can "plug and play" as to not have to worry.
And I HATE lugging a full gas can down a pier, onto the boat, over the bench seat and into its makeshift harness. My solution? Boyfriend

I fill at the gas station on the way & fill 12 gals in cans , and my camper toy hauler has 34 gal gas station on it if needed.
I am going out to the desert for a few days to try out my new to me 2006 Yamaha Rhino and dry wash some gold.

I have mine filled at the gas dock. But I just have a 15 HP and last year I clocked 164 hours and used a bit over 300 gallons.

Same here..... and we also have a rule that once the gauge shows 1/2 tank or less, we fill er up..... once last season I didn't pay attention to the fuel gauge and when we were headed back to the launch I glanced down only to see the gauge showing "below empty"..... talk about cutting it close... not more than 30 seconds after I got the boat up on the trailer, the tank ran dry..... that will not happen again...

I recently converted to a shaker siphon. I had seen a few people at my dock use them and did not pay much attention. We are not allowed to fuel at the dock (private marina)so rather then pay "river gas" prices I always have put a couple 7 Gallon cans on and went to the public boat launch dock and fueled. My buddy docked behind me saw me carry my cans on and asked if I would like to try his shaker. I decided that since I was planning on going to a regular beach we go to, I would try it while beached instead of going to the boat launch. I put the hose in the filler and stuck the other in the can. I literally shook it 3 times and the gas started flowing. It drained the can in about less then 5 min. without loosing a drop! With this thing and my enclosure I can now fuel at my dock without a soul knowing I am! I will never do it any other way again!

works great, dont deal with the gas can spout , just take the whole top off, jiggle and it does its thing, with out spilling anything.

I just got a jiggle siphon from Lowes for $9.00 it works great called a wonder pump. Here is Delaware if you gas at a fuel dock, or gas station for your boat you submit your receipt to the state and they refund back your highway tax portion of the price $0.23. So the on water prices aren't too bad. Do all states do that?
