Yamaha owners

#1 Post by ROLAND » Mon Jul 29, 2013 3:01 pm

Hey guys, any of you who own or who have ever owned a yamaha outboard, have you ever heard that you're not supposed to use an absorbed glassmat battery ( agm ) with your outboard. I ask because I was about to buy one for my F75, but ran across a couple of blogs where people said yamaha doesnt' want people to use agm batteries with thier outboards... something to do with it can screw up the recharging system on the outboard.... I've emailed yamaha but so far no response.. I did call a local yamaha dealer and thier service dept. had never heard this.. however they said they checked the manual for mercury outboards and he says that merc. recommends agm batteries... he found that strange saying that as far as he knew the recharging system on both the yammys and the mercs were very similar... anyway, sure don't want to waste $$ on an agm if it's not going to work correctly, and sure as hell don't want to mess up my outboard..

Only thing I know about is they do require a different charge rate then a lead acid battery to get max service. Has to do with the internal resistance I think. :donno

I've had 2 in my toon for 8 months now w/o issue. I've drained one down pretty good on an overnight once and it charged right up fairly quick off the motor. Did a load test on both of em about 3 weeks ago and they were like new.

I prefer one single lead based car battery for a boat. The last two batteries I had lasted something like 8 years apiece. My old 2 stroke 115 hp Yamaha takes very little power to start the motor. 4 strokes use a little more power, however.

If someone has a trolling motor or runs a big power booster sound system, two deep cycle batteries would work better.

The AGM batteries are just a little expensive for my intended use. They're very good in auto use if you're building a street rod or need to place a battery on its side--or upside down.

My yamaha has been happy with an AGM for the last few years. AGM charge the same as lead acid. Gel batteries do not.

Okay, actually talked to a tech at Yamaha today... he told me specifically that agm batteries should NOT be used with yamaha outboards.. He told me it had nothing to do with the charging systems on the yammy's, but simply said that agm batteries were not compatible with their outboards... I know some here use agm's with their yamahas, and have done so without incident... but for me personally, since my motor is still under warranty, think I'll just go with a good high crancking wet cell battery....

That makes no sense at all. If it's not about the (slightly) different charging needs, then what? AGM delivers the same current to the starter as LA and SLA. What else matters?

It doesn't make sense simply because it's senseless. Roland for some unknown reason has been desperate for sometime to find someone or anyone to side with him on his stance on AGM's and finally he found someone to go along with him. After all we've all encountered it at one time or another and usually end up just giving up and going along with the flow. After all if a person searches hard enough they'll encounter someone who will agree with any opinion but it still doesn't mean either of them are actually right.

Must be a full moon out tonight,.. where the hell did that come from... let's get this straight right now.. I haven't been trying to find someone to side with me against AGM batteries.... the truth is I was hoping to buy an agm battery for my boat, but came across several forums that said that yamaha didn't recommend using them.... when I didn't get a "conclusive" answer to whether or not there might be an issue with them, I called Yamaha directly and got the info straight from the horses mouth... so no, I wasn't trying to get anyone to side with me against agm batteries, I was simply looking for a difinitive answer to the issue before I layed out a couple of hundred bucks.. pure and simple.
