Trip to LOTO = Dented fence

#1 Post by kryptonite » Sun Aug 04, 2013 5:35 pm

Well it was a good trip until :censored :censored :censored :censored :censored

We stayed in the Niangua arm where it's not as busy, or so I thought.

We were headed back up the Niangua on Saturday, around a narrow curve in the arm. Big ass cruiser on the outside of the curve, we were on the inside with no where to go. I saw it coming, had people move to the back, slowed, put a slight angle to it, then slight power trying to trim front end up, but it wasn't enough. I didn't even think about it getting dented til we were back at the dock later and I saw it. Not terrible, I popped it back out, but I can see it and it bothers me. I can probably live with it, but on the other hand.... Guess insurance covers shit like that but not sure what the deductible is. Have to check into that I guess.

Overall trip was great.

Thursday: Travel day, headed down, settled in (rented house) We were up the Niangua arm about the 7.5 mile marker in a nice cove. Short ride to the 54 brige and back. Supper with some family that lives in the area, short boat ride for the kids in the evening. Saw a large slip and slide down a hill into the lake.

Friday: Kind of dodged rain, but never really got wet. Went to Fish and CO. up Linn creek for lunch. Headed up the Osage Arm (main channel) to the 38 mile marker and back home for supper. Wife, sister and I went out at night to Naughti Fish (Niangua arm just upstream of the Hwy 5-7 bridge) in the evening. They had a one man band that was good. We met the new owners, three guys fresh out of college from out east, bought the place in June from a re-po. Good time, big thunderstorm brewed up while we were there, so we stuck around til later when all the rain passed and headed back in the dark. Thanks to all the blue lights on the docks, it's easy to see the channel. Got to see a great lighting show off to the east from the storm that passed.

Saturday: Headed to the end of the Niangua arm to Ha Ha Tonka state park. We used the docks and hiked up the hill to the old castle ruins. Back down to the boat, coved out for awhile and watched the boats roll in. There is a fresh spring there and the water temp is about 5 degrees cooler in that cove, so everyone likes it when it's hot. Headed back up to the Naughti Fish for lunch. They had a comedian/one man band that was good. He got my Mom and Dad up there cause it's their 40th wedding anniversary, it was a good time. After that headed up the Little Niangua arm a ways, then back home for a light supper. I think I gained 5 pounds from all the good food.

I did get complimented from an onlooker on my docking job at the Naughti Fish. Of coarse the deck overlooks the docks. They were busy as hell, only open slip is in the middle of two rows of courtesy docks. They need to have them further apart, cause the boats on each side only left about 12' between them, then I had to get turned into the slip. I actually had to back in the slip with 100K boats on all sides. Talk about nerve racking, cause I knew the owners of them had to be watching.

Sunday: head for home.

Kryptonite, I can't tell if your toon has two or three logs, but when I was demoing on a Bennington triple log at the 20 mm on the Osage and we were going to have to cross a big cruiser wake, the sales guy said don't slow down, just power through the wake at a safe speed. Over the last several years of operating the boat we finally purchased, that theory has held true. If possible, I'll try to take them at a 45 degree angle, but I've never had any issues going at 90 degrees either. The boat just seems to ride right over the tops of the waves.
Sorry about the bad experience; hope you'll come back. Usually the water is a lot smoother above the 40 mile marker on the Osage. Lot's of visitors to the Lake think there's no water up there!

Only 2 tubes. I was under power, just not full power, don't think that would have been good wither way, it was a 5' wave. We took several big ones before that no problem, but just bad luck this time.

Just got off the phone with my insurance guy. I have a 250 deductible, so I'm turning it in. I figure I wouldn't live with it on a car, why would I on my boat. This is gonna be interesting though, he had never had anything like this before.

Well, that sucks. My neighbor has an old 2 tube 24 footer and in big waves, he just takes them sideways and tells everyone to hang on. He doesn't have the power to take them on straight. Me, like bassn's test ride, I power up and go right over them, and we have a ton of them water plows.

Another neighbor wasn't paying any attention, hit a wake, and it pushed up not only the front fence, but the front lounges as well. They had to bend everything back down just to get see to get back home.

At least now you know what to expect and how your toon handles the big water. And thankfully, there aren't that many cruisers down that way.

Man that would scare me even more, I'd be worried about rolling it over on a wave like that.

We were coming back under the toll bridge on Saturday and saw a guy nose dive into the wake of a big cruiser, it buried the folks on board in a wall of water and probably did a bit of damage to his toon. We were on a 25 foot Crest tri-toon and were rockin and rollin on the way back to Coconuts. That lake is rough on boats.

Ya, I stuffed one - once. I had a 24 foot double log Sundancer and a couple decided to sit up front (total weight 500 lbs). My wife (100 lbs) decided to go up and talk to them. Normally, it is not an issue as I take the wakes sideways. But then, I had 2 cruiser wakes that came together right in front of me, and as it stuffed, the wall of water went over her back. My initial thought was that we would pitch pole, but it popped back out. The deck wash was ankle deep, but at least no one was hurt and we all had a good laugh, until the folks up front took a swig of their beers and it was mostly lake water. :rofl

No damage, other than to my boat driving ego. :smoke
