Spring start up (late)

#1 Post by Silver Eagle » Sat Aug 10, 2013 8:31 am

Yesterday after not starting up my 90 hp Merc since last Sept. We noticed some clean oil on the grass under the prop. It cranked over normally but didn't start right away. Then when I did get it to start it smoked for a while .I ran it up to 3,000 rpm's for about 10 minutes. (Yes I had water going into to it.)water temp was normal. It ran normal. The oil looked like the oil used in the injector reserve. Before I started the motor I checked the oil reserve and it was low so I topped it off.The weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow so it's the first time out this year..It's been to hot or to wet. and I'm to old .So my question is, is this normal for out of the water start up.?I did shut it down once and started it back up, no problem.

x2^^

My 88 Johnson does that after it sits for a while. Runs fine though. If its is really bad, you may need a carb rebuild but if it runs fine I wouldn't mess with it. Im going to rebuild my carbs sometime over the winter.

Yep, very common for 2 strokes sitting for awhile.
