Toon Camping on Truman Lake ?

#1 Post by Mosnowman » Wed Sep 04, 2013 8:29 pm

So I think the DW and I may give camping on the lake in our toon a try. I usually boat on Pomme de Terre but thought I would give Truman a try. We would be looking on the east side coming up 65 most likely to the Warsaw Area or just south of there. Do any of you Truman regulars have suggestions on where to tie up/anchor? I have heard the depth changes quickly and many trees are present so any specific areas you would recommend? Any concerns with the lake?

Any "on the lake camping" advice from you other guys would also be appreciated!

Well one thing to know right off is there are no private docks on the lake. I like the Osage arm personally because it is further away from the dam. I have never overnight camped on it. There are plenty of coves you can get back into though. There is a really huge one across from Talley Bend and a little to the East that we always anchor and tube at. That would be a fantastic place to overnight I would think. This area is a little further west than what you wanted though. If you know where the Boy Scout camp is that is our stomping grounds. Our camping lots are right next door to the BS camp.
As for timber the last two years the lake as actually been low except for this year. As long as you know what to look for your good. I have never had a nick in my prop in going on 5 years.

closest marina too us.

I sent a screen capture of google maps. It shows Warsaw in the top right to give you an idea of the area. The first link has a really great pdf for all the ramps and marinas.

I am sure Kenneth (Redbeard) can give you some more info on the East side.

Any questions shoot me a pm.

Mosnowman I've just stated camping out on the boat this year I now know why everyone likes it so much it can't be beat and I also have a place with A/c and a nice bed at the lake but the camping can't be beat. To answer your question yes I have some good places to anchor but don't want to make them public so PM me your phone number and I will point you in the right direction its like giving up your fishing hot spot. Here is a link to a great map of Truman http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/Portals/2 ... akeMap.pdf I like to use Fairfield landing ramp and Osage Buff. Osage Buff is the only marina on the Osage arm of the lake they have marine fuel good people to do business with. As for props I go through 1 or 2 a year but I cruse for the most part (go where to man should go) but if you stay in the channel and have a good lake map you will be fine. That's why I have a chart plotter best money I ever spent. As for the depth changing yes it dose again use the map if I know where you plan on going I can tell where not to go. Hope this helps you and maybe we can meet up some time at Truman or at Pomme De Terre. I want to go see some of the other lakes in the area sometime in the future.

Thanks guys! Great info!

I definitely was looking at Osage Bluff Marina and Fairfield area. One question I forgot to ask is whether you can leave a vehicle and trailer at the Marina? Also since I own the most stolen vehicle in America...a 2013 Ford F250...is the Marina safe and secure? The only thing I am concerned about toon camping is where is the best safest place to leave my vehicle.

Great question! Never even thought of that... I would think Osage Bluff would be fine. They have a hotel and Truman has a lot of nightime fisherman always around. One thing I forgot to mention is Talley Bend Campground is just on the other side of the bridge. So a lot of people rent a campsite and beach their boat right by their campsite. However I haven't been down much since THE FLOATER isn't running (until saturday!?) so not sure if that section is opened since the high water. For the 20 bucks I would get a camping spot have someone park the truck and trailer and pick them up at the shore. I do know they drive through all their spots every weekend night. this could be done at most spots on Truman...I think.

Kenneth any thoughts? :donno

When are you thinking of trying?

Yes you can park at the Osage Bluff Marina the owner lives there in a house that over looks the packing lot it is not a fenced in parking lot. Fairfield is a COE lot so no one is there to keep an eye on things but the POPO dose come by a few times a night and so dose the COE. BTW Osage Bluff is the port for the water patrol if that helps out any. If you put in at Fairfield go north around the inland NOT to the south there is a channel but it's only about 15 feet wide and easy to ground it there (ask me how I know) but it's a good ramp to use. There is a COE camp ground at Osage Bluff if that would be of any help.
