What Is Considered High Engine Hours

#1 Post by Diamondjim » Fri Sep 06, 2013 3:00 pm

I posted on the Welcome board but made another post here, maybe this is more appropriate.

I am buying a 25' Toon with a 115hp 4-stroke Yamaha. The boat and engine are both 2011 models and have been used as a rental at the local marina. The engine has 363 hours on it and it still runs like new. The marina owner is a good friend and is giving me a very good deal on it so with all that said, here is my question. What is considered high hours on a 4 stroke outboard? I know that 363 hours in 2 years is high but what about the overall life of the engine. I won't be putting those kind of hours on it even during the summer. The marina operator also has had the engine serviced per the schedule. Thanks, Jim

If you are sure it was properly maintained then those hours are nothing. I know a couple of Commercial fisherman that put 3 to 4 times that a year (on that exact engine) and can get 5000 or more hours but they maintain them.

It's just broken in. Maintained well, a modern outboard has many hours of life.

Jim, good luck with the "new to you" boat! Yes, that motor is barely broken in! You'll get good use of that baby!
Congrats Buddy! I think your the first in my book to buy the EzFenders, before the boat! Thanks!!!

Thanks, Bryan. This is about the 6th or 7th one I have owned, in addition to 2 houseboats and several skiboats but about the last 6 years without any boat.. I have had this boat spoken for for a month so I have had plenty of time to get geared up. I am ready to get back on the water!!
