4 stroke outboard

When we bought or first pontoon 20 years ago the salesman told me that it's not good idea to run a 2 stroke at the same RPM for long periods at a time because it can damage the motor. Does the same apply to today's 4 strokes ?

You can run either 4 strokes or 2 strokes at the same speed all the time. He may have been referring to the break in period, when you want to vary the rpm's.

Some of the new 4 stroke motors have a tendency to run a little cool and are actually a little hard to get the piston rings properly seated. It doesn't hurt the motors to run at full throttle momentarily during breaking--after the first couple of hours.

Yep...Drive it like you stole it! Evinrude recommended to run full throttle for 1 hour on the first run, to seat in the rings on my 250 Etec. Never a problem.
