Battery size and VSR

OK, looking for some input here. I've searched a bit and can't really find what I'm looking for. I'm going with a dual battery setup and going to get a VSR (voltage sensitive relay). I'll have a cranking and deep cycle battery. I thought I read somewhere that they suggest the batteries be the same bank. is this true? I want to go with a 27 bank deep cycle battery, but don't know why I would need to go with a bigger starter battery. Ideally, I'm wanting to go with a 24 bank starting battery and a 27, or maybe even 29 bank deep cell for the house battery.

Is there really a need to keep the batteries banks equal with a VSR?

Thanks in advance.

B.E.L. installation instructions recommends that the second is larger than the starting battery. I had a SeaCat cc in 2011 and installed the B.E.L. system per instructions and it worked good.

I now have a pontoon and installed a Blue Sea Systems Add-A-Battery kit (#7649) two months ago. I have a start battery in the rear and two larger batteries under the council wired in parallel to power my 12 volt anchor winch. This set up has also worked good (so far).

Kind regards,

Thanks for the info. I didn’t think the bank size would matter, but thought I read that it did somewhere. Seems to me that there wouldn’t really be a need for a bigger than 24 bank starting battery if I’m planning to use a house battery for everything. I’m thinking the EZACDC kit looks pretty good as it comes with the swtich, VSR, wires and everything except the actual battery cables.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I am going to go with a 27bank starting battery and 31bank house battery. Based on pricing, it’s not really that much more vs. a 24bank start and 27 bank house. Unless there’s really a reason other than weight not to.

Below is a little matrix I put together during my search for the batteries. Ideally, I’d go with AGM batteries, but those are expensive!!! Maybe after these are finished I’ll change over. Right now I’m trying to get the boat finished and still maintain a decent budget.

The EZACDC reads like a nice kit.... It uses parts from both Blue Sea and BEL. BUT.... $209?
My Blue Sea kit was $80 from Amazon.

Thanks for all of the input so far.

The EZacdc kit is 209, but it's not bad if if you figure that it comes with the wiring as well as the ground buss also. The marine wiring gets expensive pretty quick.Cables alone seem to run about $60 on the low end.
