Merc fuel filter "tool"...
Hello All.
I have a '07 Merc 75 4 stroke hanging off the back of our toon. I bought the 2 inline fuel filters and went to change them out a few days ago... No go. I tried using screw drivers on the little red "U" clips but decided to call off the work because I didn't want to bugger up the clips. I looked briefly for the "tool" that would work but did not see anything. Anyone know where I can find the correct tool to get those ever important clips out to change the inline filters? Thanks All.
Sincerely,
Rich

Re: Merc fuel filter "tool"...
Our parts guy LAUGHED when I asked for the tool. He said there's no such beast.
I changed my filters, and it was easy as pie. I think you press in on those red buttons, instead of trying to pry them up. It took me seconds to change my filters. The filters are the same, and the only caution is that the high pressure filter could be ... well ... PRESSURIZED, and could spray fuel when you remove it, so do it slowly.

Re: Merc fuel filter "tool"...
Push in on the clips as Bob said. There should be a Schraeder valve to release pressure on the high side filter.

X3. Push in on the flat part of the red clips and pull the fuel hose away from the filter. Put in new filter and push the hose back on and the clips will pop back into place. If its been several hours since cranking your motor, the fuel pressure will have had time to depressurize. If not, the Schroeder valve will do the trick. Looks like a tire valve stem with a cap on it.

Re: Merc fuel filter "tool"...
Just push!!!... No tools needed!
I went out to the boat last evening with two small screw drivers in hand. Started prying, pushing, pinching with the drivers... Nothing! Looked closer and saw that the red "U" clip was not a "U" at all! Went all the way around... It is an "O" clip. Can't have an "O" clip that "comes off". So I pushed the red part of the clip as I was pulling the filter out and Wal-Lah... Eurecha... Came right out!!! Thank you Jesus.
. I am glad I didn't mess the "clips" up with the screw drivers. So, if you have a late model Merc and you are trying to change your inline fuel filters. Don't bring your tools with you, just push the clip and pull the filter. Safe boating...

Rich

Re: Merc fuel filter "tool"...
Every above comment told you to push the flat part of the clips. No one said the clips were "u" clips that came off. Sometimes it's good to reread the post before you attempt to do work. No screwdriver necessary!

Re: Merc fuel filter "tool"...
WOWWWwwwww.... Do I look and feel like a real knuckle head...
Mea Culpa... I had in my thick head, no "special" tool was out there so I thought a "regular" tool like a screw driver was all I needed... Sorry guys, I did read your posts but obviously I continued to think I need a tool. And to think I was so excited to let you guys know what I found out... That which you already told me...
Thanks again for your help and patience too.
Sincerely,
Rich
