I think I'm done fighting with snaps and want the Easy button. Does anyone have experience with using velcro vs snaps for holding your mooring cover in place? I'm not interested in trailering, just for either at the dock or on the trailer. I have a nice factory cover with bimini cutouts and maybe 731 snaps going all the way around. It doesn't look like there is much chance for wind to get underneath so I'm wondering if it would be an option to replace the snaps with velcro.

The snaps on the boat are all on a rail wide enough to adhere a 1" strip and I thought of having a 2" strip sewn on the inside of the cover to allow for some adjustment. Some places show velcro in bulk with a marine grade adhesive...

Here's how the rails are...

It's not on my mooring cover but I put it on the window panels & the apron that covers the fence to keep the rain out. At first I was using the Velcro to close up as much from the bugs as I could. Turns out it holds up so well I didn't put snaps on as I originally going to. Only problem is after time some of the adhesive starts to give out & not hold. I just apply more.

I've tried velcro on my new seat covers. It doesn't work.

Velcro really won't work on a mooring cover, as they're subject to high winds, etc. in the open air. Snap's the only way.

It takes some strong hands to fit my mooring cover, and I'm thankful that I only use it from November to April. My boat's in a covered boathouse 12 mos. out of the year.

Well, I don't have a boathouse, and I do want to keep it covered when I'm not there. I was basing my velcro knowledge on experience with my last boat and towing it at up to 70 mph with 14-15 year old velcro that held the cockpit cover to the bow cover. At that age it was starting to rot but it still held well at highway speeds...


I find snaps, on their best days, to be difficult for me to work, and especially in the positions found on most boats while moored. Old injuries and such have left my gyro not as good as it could be. Maybe I'll use copious quantities of 303 on everything until I pull out for the winter and hope for the best. The interior furniture layout doesn't lend itself easily to individual covers. Maybe I'm just too OCD and need to lighten up...

The original cover I want to modify has three adjustable poles with snaps to help with that.

I never had any problems with snaps on my old Manny. The Premier has the J clips, that eliminate the snaps. But you have to have grooved rails to accept them. What problems are the snaps giving you? Are they coming un-snapped while towing?

About the only tow I have is twice a year to and from the ramp a half mile away. The snaps are maybe just on my bad list. They never seem to align well with their better half, are either too tight or too loose, and lack any sort of adjustment as the fabric tends to stretch or shrink in the direction opposite where I think it should. Then there's leaning over the rail while docked in various contortions to clear the furniture and reach the snaps. This is about time to cue the biggest wake of the day, with whitecaps, while my back is to the lake, hanging over the edge, trying to stretch that pesky snap just one more 1/8". I'm sure it's a great show for the neighbors... "Hey Bubba, lookie here... Ken is trying to put that cover on again!"

hated our snaps on the mooring cover. impossible to snap and un-snap! then I took the advice of some folks here to get some kind of EZ tool, which was better than my fingers/thumbs. another suggested Chapstick on each rail button and now it's a cinch! no we'd for the EZ tool now. try it before replacing with Velcro?
