I almost won a very nice metal gas tank on ebay from my sweetwater. But lost out last minute.
I was thinking how many other have metal tanks are there cons to using them.

I can think of 2 cons to a metal tank, maybe 3.
#1. Rust. My plastic tank will never rust.
#2. I can see through my plastic tank to see how much fuel I have. Just in case the guage quits on me
#3. Weight. I'm betting my plastic tank weighs less than the comparable metal one.

I've never seen an aluminum fuel tank rust, however.
The dark gray plastic tanks are thicker and more robust than the red plastic tanks. They're meant to be built in, too.
I always used a couple of 12 gallon red plastic portable fuel tanks. They were easier to deal with when winterizing my old 2 stroke, as I could easily get them completely emptied.

Poly is the way to go as far as I'm concerned. Lighter, see thru and no rust. Aluminum is ok but you cant see thru it.

mine is some type of opaque plastic/poly/whatever, too...
but, for those that have a metal tank... if it's too dark to see the depth inside... just open it up, then light your zippo to check the depth!
<sorry>

Remember when installing a poly tank for the first time is that over the first few weeks with gas in it that it will expand 2-3% in size. I have a 22 gallon poly tank and I made the mounting cage (part of my tow bar) 1/4" bigger than the tank and it grew to fit tightly in the frame.
