We bought a Sun Tracker over the weekend and it did not come with a stereo. I am wanting to use my iphone, ipod, etc for the music. Can I bypass the stereo component altogether?

Yep, just pick up a sound bar, sound box or find an old guitar amp -- they all have inputs to connect from in iPhone. Until we changed stereos on the boat to something with a USB input, we used an old guitar amp that my stepson had left at the house. We used a little power inverter hooked to an extra battery to power it up (and also keep the iPod charged). Worked great and we still use that setup occasionally on the dock.

I'll be the first to admit that we never utilize the radio or head unit itself on our boat. Here's a fast result that came up that may be perfect for your needs. But then again I didn't look deeper to see what this unit actually sells for either.

Yep, old MTX car amp in the console powering a pair of 6.5" Polks using an headphone to RCA cable. A pair of 6.5" speakers with 60wrms is plenty enough to piss other people off if need be.

I got one of the boss stereo units with no CD but it has a SD card, USB and a pod input to 4 6.5 boss marine speakers. and its 200 watts per channel and 4 channels. its been fine now going on 3 years. Total cost was around 150.00

Nobody's thought about stealing my POS $59 OEM Sony head unit and $15 speakers.
If I had the sub woofer and all the goodies, I'd have to sit shotgun over my boat. The thieves would be paddling up to my boathouse in the middle of the night to relieve me of my assets.
They're also bad about helping themselves to lower units and stainless steel propellers

I need to upgrade by head unit to get more power to the speakers. I am pretty sure the current head unit is from 2006 and doesn't have a mp3 port. I don't think I want a sub or amp and I bet a pretty good powered head unit would do the job for what I want.

Just about every head unit I've seen tested struggles to put out an actual 15 watts RMS at a "listenable" distortion level. That's 15w @ 1% distortion, my old MTX car amp is 60w @ 0.1% and is probably over 100w at the same 1% the deck is rated at. Don't buy into the 4x60w that a deck advertises. I've had people ask how many speakers I have as mine sounds so clear/clean at high levels and the answer is TWO, just the little 6.5" up front with lots of clean power.
