Wiring To Test Start Motor ??

#1 Post by OldPontooner » Mon Aug 04, 2014 1:22 pm

Howdy, I am a newbie to this forum, and I am also new to boats and boat motors at 76 years old. Kind of hard to believe huh?

Here is my problem. I took a Suzuki 75hp off of my 1988 pontoon boat, and am installing a 1988 125 Merc Force motor. Needless to say the wiring harness from the Suzuki is different colors than what the Force book calls for. I am very familiar with start motors and solenoids, and have that all wired. What I need to know is what wires on the wiring panel of the force need to have power to them in order for me to start the motor and keep it running for a test run?

If I jump a hot wire to the magg terminal will the motor continue to run?

Any and alllllllllll help is greatly appreciated by this OLD Cowboy....

Thanks,
Rick

As a ship engineer I'm no stranger to wiring up stuff; but this is one I can't help with as without being live on the spot to meter out the circuits its a risk I can't take....

But I will comment that you are one brave old cowboy taking on the wiring of two completely different manfactures....

Thanks a bunch Craig that really helped a lot. Now I only have one question that I don't know the answer to, and that is: What causes the motor to stop when you turn the key off??

BTW, went to your post on your boat rebuild. Boyyyyy you sure did a beautiful job on your old pontoon !! :ten

Thanks on the compliment! That was a long read for you! I learned A LOT during all of my mishaps. One thing was when I was testing out the new switch box I had unhooked the kill switch wire at the box and started the motor just to see if she would would fire. I didn't have a hose on it yet. Well she fired and then wouldn't shut off! Man I was freaking out. The second I touched the kill wire (black yellow) to the terminal she died. It was 6 seconds but seemed like forever! I don't see one listed on your picture though so you may not have one. Try browsing through this.... This site finally got me over the hump.
