Transducer Placement

Where do you guys mount your fish/depth finder transducer? Mine is on the stern of the boat on the bottom of one of the toons. It seems to work ok, but I noticed that I get a lot of fish "indicators" at or very near the surface when underway. It seems like there are times when I'm going a little faster that I'll see a TON of stacked fish. I'll slow down, drop a line vertically, and jig for a while but nada. The amount of fish drops when I slow down too. You think the prop wash is affecting the readings of the fish finder. It is a lowrance pro x4 (cheapie they installed when I bought it).

Mine is factory mounted in the same place as yours and works great. Or, it did until the current pushed my anchored boat onto some shallow rocks and broke off the transducer. If replace an older style depthfinder,/fishfinder (especially a Lowrance) you may be able to sell the used transducer for a good price on Craigs List. I had to really pay up for a replacement due to 19 bidders. Those older model transducers are hard to find.

You may be getting some "disturbed water" with it mounted on bottom of the log(my opinion) The location is a tricky thing low enough to get soundings at speed but out of harms way. Most logs have a bracket that you can mount one on.

I've got two transducers. One is the original Garmin 95 mounted on the bracket of the port side pontoon. The other is a Humminbird mounted at the rear of the transom. For reasons I can only guess (quality of fish finder or location of transducer), the Garmin has much poorer (noise) image on screen at speed than the Humminbird which will function nearly flawlessly even at WOT. The Garmin will even loose the ability to show correct depth beyond about 20mph.

I'm guessing that the water stream behind the port tube is much more disturbed maybe due to the keel running right to the back of the tube. Seems most toons have the bracket mounted on one of the tubes.
