Is there reverse lock out in an outboard?
A less experienced driver was pulling a tuber last weekend. The tuber signaled to cut the motor and the driver got a little anxious and put the motor into reverse before stopping (from 4500 rpm).
I did not hear any bad sounds but the motor did stall out. Is there some sort of safety device to keep this from happening on outboards? Any chance of hurting the motor?

Re: Is there reverse lock out in an outboard?
Why would you want to put a lock on your brakes?
Not even tug boats and ships have any means of locking out reverse as that is our only means of stopping quickly.... Timing systems we have but no means of locking out would be tolerated....

Re: Is there reverse lock out in an outboard?
Because going into reverse when the engine hasn't idled down may not be good for the motor. It certainly would not lock out reverse when the engine is at a low enough RPM.teecro wrote:Why would you want to put a lock on your brakes?

On my Yamaha the throttle has a red lever that must be pulled to put it in gear so you would have to be pulling it to switch from fwd to reverse. It pops out at the neutral position.
