Install carpet on the runners or no,,,,,

The PO had replaced the wood runners/bunks with doug fir but did not re-cover them with carpet. He felt the carpet held the moisture in and contributed to rotting the previous bunks. They 30 Party Hut seems to go on and off OK,,, but I have no comparisons to when it was carpeted to know if it's better or worse.
So what say you? Is the carpet needed for protection and to reduce friction, or are his concerns of water retention and mold justified? thanks for the help

I covered the top and the 2 sides, leaving the bottom of the boards
uncovered to aid in draining the water off. So far, 3 seasons, all is well.
I'd like to comment on your question about running up the Sac river to
Redding. I am not saying do not try that, just saying do some research.
regards, old jim

I thought the same thing about only covering three sides,,, and might just go with plastic. I saw where someone had taken plastic 4x4 fence post and cut them in 1/2 ,,,,
And the trip up the sac does concern me,,, I'm a nube so any advice/help/warnings VERY welcome !!!

When I bought my toon last year, the Bear Trailer has plastic covered runners. I'd bet they'd be easier and cheaper than plastic fence posts and cutting them.
Something like this would be easy to install.

Can't say vinyl the fence posts are the easiest choice given here but at a buck thirty two a foot vrs the two fifty a foot roll stuff. In my application at least I saved myself a few cases of beer.

I installed Douglas Fir on the previous four boat trailers bunks and then bought ½” thick Starboard material and ripped them at 3” wide x the length of each board. I counter sunk the holes in each to clear the bolt heads at 8" apart and inserted galvanized 5/16”carriage bolts thru the Starboard and thru the bunk boards and secured them with flat washers, lock washers and nuts.
They worked great but be advised, don’t unhook your straps until your stern is in the water.
I’ll be doing the same with this Toon's bunk boards.

I have not priced the fence post yet,,,,, is your calculation per foot done before or after splitting them in half? Not afraid of a little work and I am a COB,,, and love to pinch a penny !!!

With four 30 foot bunks to cover this and the rolled stuff get pricey,,,, what will it hurt to leave the raw wood as long as my boat goes on and off OK,,, will it damage the toons ya think??

Hell at my age, why pinch pennies and leave the dollars to the kids? It'd be different if I didn't have the money...I've got to go for the gusto
