Best way to apply waterproffing to new canvas,,,

#1 Post by grouser » Mon Feb 16, 2015 8:22 pm

I have hung the new enclosure on the Hut, now I want to apply the waterproofing to it. The bottle says roll it, spray it, wipe it on. What have you guys found that works best? One coat or two? Is it OK to treat a brand new canvas or should I wait a bit??? Thanks

I use a garden pump sprayer and waterproof my cover once a year, I lay it in the driveway and spray it with 303 water proofing every Spring.

I think its a waste to do it now. The material when new should repel water fine. I have a Sun Tracker bimini on my pontoon that repels water after many years although the bimini is only exposed to the sun when I take the boat out.

Make sure you're researching the material used. You can ruin the material with any additional water proofing. A lot of the newer materials used for boating jackets, snow board, etc. particular state that on the labels. May not apply to boat covers but a little research can prevent any damage.

Well call me an askhole but I went against some advise to not put on the waterproofing on new canvas.......
But I have to say I'm happy I did. It looks great and I feel like it did some good. The instructions stated it would add years to the life of new canvas,,,,, we shall see. As far as the best application method I tried everything but a sponge (only cuz the OL wouldn't let me have one of her good ones!). I used a 4 inch roller for the narrow places between the window, and a full sized roller on the roof. The rollers put it on pretty good but sometimes I had a foaming residue left on the canvas so I would hit it with the brush to even it out. I used the brush to get all the corners and tight spots also. A sponge probably would have worked well as I discovered that wiping the roller sideways worked the liquid in pretty well on some convex spots. Remember I'm not painting here so brush marks did not become a problem. Getting an equal, wet surface over the entire canvas was my only goal. Turned the canvas a bit darker, as you'd expect a liquid to do, but will have to wait to see if the color change is permanent. Happy with the coverage as I only used maybe hald a gallon, or maybe a bit more on the entire front enclosure. I have plenty left to do the rear enclosure when I get it back from the shop. This is a 30 foot Party Hut full enclosure so I am happy with being able to get it all done with one gallon. I'm sure it would cover a 32 foot Party Cruiser.
Thanks for all your replies !!!
