My boat shop mechanic told me the last time he changed a prop on a pontoon for owner that wanted to go down in pitch 2 numbers he lost 7-8mph. and suggested in my case he thought my motor was down a bit low so he raised it one bolt hole higher. I have not tested it yet, he thinks I will pick up some rpms and a little speed .......any thoughts?

When I moved my 60hp from my old boat to my pontoon, I lined up the cavitation plate up with the water line marks on my logs. From there I would go up or down one bolt hole at a time and test till I got the best speed and RPMs. Then I got a new prop to get my RPMs to what was listed in my owners manual for my outboard. I found a used engine hoist on Craigslist for $50 and can get the motor moved in about 15 minutes.

Experimenting with engine heights and props may provide a little improvement, but low horsepower engines are not capable of much speed no matter what you do.
