new to tooning, so may be a odd question.

my toon has a 6 gallon above deck tank (red with a vent in cap). I have a 50 HP Evinrude outboard.
is it legal to carry a regular 2.5 or 5 gallan gas can on the boat as spare fuel?
hoping to not have to purchase a larger tank, but maybe that is the way to go.

BTW I live in South Carolina, don't know if it makes a difference.

I have a 50 horse also but have a built in 20 gallon tank. I would be really bummed if all the fuel I had was 6 gallons as it would cut way down on how far we could venture away from marina.
I would thing a couple of 5 gallon gas containers would be fine as long as they are properly stored.

I wish you were close as I would give you 2 Evinrude 6 gal tanks

I have a built in 20 gallon tank and a sit on deck 12 gallon that can be seen from the stern of my boat. I have never been questioned about it. But I really don't give a damn. It is imprudent to not have a "come home" fuel tank onboard.

I also have a globed fuel filter and water separator that I can drain the bottom of before it goes to the engine.

My mistake folks. My tank is a 12 gallon (not 6). I went and looked tonight.

guess I just need to fill it all the way.

Probably will keep a 2.5 gallon spare too. Our lake is not that big, but was scary almost running out.

luckily got it back to the slip just as it died for good.

another question is, should I close the vent screw in the cap when docked ? the tank sits under a fold out cover. I am assuming it is only needed to be opened when running the motor.

My old Starcraft didn't have built in tanks, however I used a Moeller 12 gallon plastic tank and a 6 gallon steel Yamaha tank. If I ever needed more range, I do have a second 12 gallon tank.

My Bennington 24SSLX has a relatively small 21 gallon fuel tank. When I do some Summer river cruising, I'll be carrying two 5 gallon plastic Jerry cans and I have one of the 14 gallon plastic Gas Buddy tanks on wheels. With 45 gallons, I'll be good for a day and a half of long distance cruising.

As long as they are approved containers for fuel you should be alright IMHO. And about the vent,,,, if you close it, and the sun hits the tank it will build up pressure in the tank. And the collapse the thing if it gets really cool at night. So I guess that's not to good on the tank so I would leave it cracked open,,,my 2 cents worth !!!
