squirrelly tach readings

Hi folks. I'm always amazed at the engine knowledge here. Dad took the boat out today and reported that the tachometer was acting funny.
"Ran most of the trip around 6 mph.
Tach reading fluctuated from 1400 rpm - about what it should have been and where it started - to over 4000!!!!!! rpm. Speed stayed constant. Pitch of engine noise remained constant but the tach reading varied unpredictably. It has 41 hours on it."
Any thoughts or advice?

sounds like a normal failed tach to me. I've had 2 BRP "systems check" tachs do this to me in 5 years. My current one, the third, just started doing this also along with one of the warning lamp dimly glowing. At least I don't need to buy another one, switching to a Suzuki DF140 in the next few weeks. One thing, tapping the face of the tach seems to "cure it" for awhile!

Thanks. Tachometer is Faria not BRP and is installed directly by Premier. Your tapping solution does work in the short term. Have contacted Premier and will see what they suggest.

pull the tach out of the dash make note of the pulse setting.... rotate the setting knob back and forth several times put it back in the setting, and reinstall, it should now be fixed, you just cleaned the contact points
