Motor dies when put into gear

My son took out my pontoon and over oiled the gas mixture. I've since corrected all mixtures and have run cleaner through it twice. My issue is that it starts fine and with the idle up but when I lower the idle and put it in gear, it dies. Eventually it will run when in gear but will be difficult to start. Checked fuel filter and it appeared to be full of gunk(for lack of a better term) and I've replaced it. I haven't had it back in the water since then so I'm not sure if that might help the situation. It's a 1988 90hp Merc 2 cycle. Any help/advice would be welcome.

If you haven't yet, you might want to check the spark plugs that maybe fouled.

Yep... I'd start with a NEW set of spark plugs and see where your at....

Clean plugs, clean Fuel Filter = good to go.

Just as a follow-up.... did as suggested....replaced fuel filter and plugs.... runs like a striped ass monkey... thanks guys... Bill
