Pontoon Boat & Deck Boat Forum

My coaching has paid off in that today my wife took our pontoon out (without me) on the lake for the first time with a couple of her visiting girlfriends...

Been a tough couple of years for us as she never realized how much she would miss living in town with everything within a 5 minute drive.

Least today she has discovered that she CAN indeed go out and do the boating thing on her own...

Hurray to both of you. Girls can toon too.

Watch Out!

She just might be taking the boat over to Waterloo this weekend for the Trail of Tears motorcycle meeting. I would think there will be at least a couple of thousand cyclists coming from as far as Chattanooga and beyond.

28 years ago, neither my wife nor I ever drove a boat. When we moved on the lake, we bought a 25 year old pontoon and both of us learned at the same time to drive it. These days, she probably takes it out more than I do. Fast forward to last summer -- I was out without the wife and was looking for a place to park at a very crowded bar/restaurant/marina at peak time. A small runabout pulled out of a narrow space right next to our friend's 38' Cigarette go fast boat. I changed course and called out to my friend to see if he thought I could get in there. His smart arse reply......."I don't know about you, but I know Crystal could do it."

Great! I make my wife drive as much as she can. She refuses to park it, though.

That's like a pilot learning to fly, but not learning how to land the plane. I know exactly how she feels, especially docking on very windy days.

I wish my lady took an interest in learning to drive the boat. The best I can hope for if something happened to me, is find her way back in and drive it onto the beach. When we'd go offshore I'll always tell her the compass heading number that will take her back to land.

Lol... The wife kept close to home and said she had no intention of going further than our closest marina for food & drinks. While she does for the most part know her way to some of the further marinas she is not ready to venture that far as she still will ask me for pointers on where to turn. I had a good laugh the last time out as she drove from the start I just let her go on her own to the point that I did pull out the map just to double check where we where and fuel options. It was a solid 1.5 hours at 25 MPH before she realized she really didn't know where she was going... We burned about 20 gallons that day and had the best time including a private cove and dinner at a favorite waterside rest.

We live in the Sunset Bay area and she got all the way past Blue Springs before realizing it...
