Hello all....I am restoring an ole 24 footer and one of the things on my list is to straighten out or cover up the narly looking jagged edged front lips of my toons. Apparently the previous owner used them as bumpers. I guess I should ask how to remove dents from the rear end of the tubes as well....he used those as bumpers too.
I will try to include a pic tonight after I visit the boat but I am talking about the absolute front part of the pontoon where there is a splash guard of sorts to keep the water from spraying up.........this is the upper deck...the highest possible lip....not the lower just to be clear.
I have heated and pounded them into a curved shape but they are still ugly and need to be covered......has anyone come up with a slick idea for this????

Can you weld aluminum?

Next would be maybe bondo glass?

Yes I recently learned the new age braising rod technique for welding aluminum. I guess I could cut some covers and weld them on. I was thinking of something creative and quick.......and even functional. Exaggerated example would be a pool noodle with a slit cut in it formed in half moon around the toon fins. Of course that would look terrible but maybe something like rubber trim....or something crazy like cut it square and mount my docking lights up there....who knows. Here are some pics.....

How much does the "covers" extend past the actual tip of each toon? Is it possible to cut those covers back far enough to remove the damage?

Yes it would be possible to do some cutting to trim the aluminum back but I think I might as well use the covers a toon protectors. I dont even know if the front part of the toon is a separate cavity or not.....I think it might be.

Taking off of your pool noodle idea....

What about riveting a corner dock bumper on it OR cutting a vertical dock post bumper to fit. You can also go to your local rubber house (or McMaster-Carr) and get a section of heavy gauge (high pressure) and stick it on there. Will hold up and look better than the pool noodle.

Thanks for the thoughts. I looked at it today. My toon is a 1984 so it has the skinny toons vs the mongo mega toon they have these days. So I will prob need the functionality of those front toon spray guards to do their thing. I started to fabricate some metal then lost interest quick. I started to think about fabricating a plastic sort of sacrificial nose cone.....heavy gauge plastic. It would be easy to cut and shape and I could easily replace it if it breaks by hitting a dock or whatever......Whatever I use it will have to be rigid to deflect the water.

Take a hammer and dolly to it, then mask off in front of tiedown and spray with black bedliner? Like an eye brow for front of toon

took the hammer to it to get it to look that good......Imagine how bad it looked before. I also torched it. I have never tried the dolly thing but if I could have someone heat it while I hammered and dollied it.....I should be able to make it look a little more yacht club and a lil less river rat.

Creative? Box it in with wood and install docking lights.

I think you should just dress them up like an old fighter, put some kill stickers on them, and run with it. They sell shark mouth decals on eBay.

Damn that plane looks cool!!!!!! Well trying to make this old 1984 Playbuoy Supreme Royal look as classy as I can post resto....dont think the wife will go for the sharks teeth but thanks for the creative idea.
Not that this would be classy....but I am thinking of buying the appropriate size frizbee and cutting it in half then through bolting it to the nose. I can pick my color and easily replaceable. Also will still function as a water deflector

Yeah I was thinking you could get it as straight as you could, then fold a thin piece of aluminum over it, mark it, trim it with aviation shears, then pop rivet it on. You could dress the edge with sheet metal edging.




But first, take a long hard look at these mission kill decals and give the shark teeth some more thought.
