New '23 Bass Buggy 18DLX - Outfitting Rec's

#1 Post by SoCalAngler » Sun Oct 30, 2022 8:00 am

Hello all--

My best bud just picked up his new toon! :nana
He ordered it and waited 3-4 months. We are in SoCal. Now we are starting to accessorize it, the fun stuff! His upgrades included: electric brakes on the single axle trailer, 75hp, and a boat cover.

Hoping some of you members, with the same or similar size toon, can make some recommendations on how he can spend his $$$!!!! :biggrin2

Toys he purchased so far:

Lowrance Elite FS 9"
Railblaza Rod Holders (8)
Fenders, dock lines, etc. (I still have some EZ fender line holders I purchased from a member here so we may use those)

He now wants:

1. 4 Bank battery charger (1 motor, 1 house, and 2 12V trolling motor batts). Where to mount?

2. Trolling motor. I am thinking a 24V due weight of boat and 3-4 passengers. Fish lakes and rivers and can encounter some wind.

Prefer Motorguide, as I have experience with them.

Where have some of you mounted the 2 12V batteries?
If in plastic battery boxes, did you drill through floor near boxes to run cables?
Where to mount the batteries... next to each other or one on each side of boat to balance weight?

3. Merc cable to connect motor to a NMEA network so he can display all motor data on FF. It's a $450 cable!!!

What else should be on his want list?

Thanks!

The four batteries is a LOT of weight. If lithium batteries are in the budget ($$$) then locating them and balancing the boat is easier. Otherwise I would split them up. I have two under the helm for trolling motor and two back by the engine compartment for starting and electronics. Rear batteries are hooked to the alternator. Even if house batteries get depleted can always start the motor to get home. Front batteries are on a two bank charger.

I've looked into 4 bank charger but they are big and expensive. It's hard to find balanced space that will hold it all in the same place unless you go with three lithium for hiuse and trolling motor..

You could split them two and two and run some higher guage wire to a second location or just get two smaller two bank chargers.

Lots of fun options.

Need a good boat hook, a good long handled fishing net, a drift sock and maybe a medium sized box anchor for boat control,

The 18' does not have a lot of floor space to get to creative with battery space.
Current single 12V OEM single starting battery is at rear storage box.
There is a spot, with battery box, under console for a single house battery. It has connections there and a 30amp breaker. This set up is OEM.

The front storage box will not fit two batteries. Therefore, two batt boxes will need to be mounted somewhere on deck. That is our current challenge.

Sounds like you guys are quickly realizing that space is at a premium on his small-ish boat. So, the first thing you can do to help him spend his money it to get him to buy a bigger boat!! :lol3

I think Jediger's recommendation to consider Lithium batteries is a great one.

The size is perfect for his uses. Larger boat=larger price tag!
Lithiums are approx. $900 per battery!

Sticking to good 'ol wet batteries at approx. $100 each!

Still would like to see some pics of where people are mounting (2) 12V batteries on their pontoon for a 24V trolling motor.
