Lake levels

#1 Post by JohnO » Sat Apr 01, 2023 9:12 pm

Hey all,

I seem to remember that in the last few years many lakes were dropping way down. Does anyone have any reports on how the lakes are doing now? I know here in Indiana it's been a very soggy last few months. And I know that the mountains in California got a lot of snow. But have lake levels come back up?

(I figure with all that empty reservoir space there probably hasn't been a flood in the west yet.)

We are back at 100% in our 33,000 acre lake in Texas.

If that's the view from your back yard I am officially jealous.
Absolutely beautiful.

Yes, sir. We live out in the cheap seats on the lake. We bought a fixer-upper that we can live in full time while fixing it up. Five years in, we have done a lot but we are not done! Our weather allows us to go out at least a few days during each winter month. We have 8.5' under the dock at full pool, so we were still boating when the lake was down 5'. Generally, we vary about 18" to 24" seasonally.

I do take a lot of pictures of the ever changing scenes. You can see more in the Member Photos section. I used to post a lot of them, but I have calmed down a bit.

Now you've opened another issue. I'm 13 months from retirement and will be buying a camper and spending much time on the road.

What does that camper weigh and what are you pulling with?
About what mpg do you expect?
What are the rates at that campground? (A sea side campground is the best of both worlds!!)

Don't want to hijack but it's your post!

What does that camper weigh and what are you pulling with? 5500# 2013 f150 v8 tow package Trailer is a 2022 primetime tracer 24dbs around 28k but that was an RV show special
About what mpg do you expect? Using a good weight distribution hitch over 10-12 mpg! my 2021 smaller camper got 9-10 with regular hitch
What are the rates at that campground? (A sea side campground is the best of both worlds!!)That cg was 80 a night full hookup and ours looks to the gulf!

Very cool. I'm probably pulling a little heavier (6028) with a 2016 2.7L V6 F150. So I'm hoping to get 10 mpg.

I figure any campsite is bound to be cheaper than hotels. Plus I get to eat what I want instead of what I feel I can afford.

Thanks!

(that is dry weight for mine) so more in the 6250 range.
They key is not totally the weight of the camper but payload of your truck. send me a PM if you want to discuss further.....

Speaking of lake levels, they must be good in CA because I read there's an ancient dry lakebed out there that's filling up and when the snowmelt starts ... Uh oh.

if you read the second link I found above they state that almost all of California is at full pool. they are even releasing water into empty fields to refill the aquifer.

it seems that Mead and Powell and a few smaller lakes up stream on the colorado are the trouble spots yet. but they have record snowpack already in the mountains so they should recover a little bit this year.

of course mead is down something like 183 feet so it will take a few wet years to refill.

Mead will not fill because the consumption has increased to a point where normal rainfall cannot keep up.

The lake we consider our "Home Lake" is currently 2.81' below "Normal".
