Welcome bcxbc.

The guage will allow you moniter how the water pump is doing during operation. Those of us without one have to realy on the water stream or Pee tube you will see it called at the back of the outboards to make sure the water cooling system is pumping water at startup or during operation. If you happen to run shallow and injest sand or mud in the water intake the water preassure guage should alert you to the problem and you can shut down before major damage to the engine is done..

Most of the time it will clearup on it's own, if you run through weeds and it gets wraped up then you have to reach back there and pull off the junk.

By the way the only stupid question is the one not asked.
