Sheildin sun from sides

#1 Post by sdhawk » Thu Feb 19, 2009 7:57 pm

Does anybody have any ideas for ways to sheild the boat from the sides when the sun is low enough that the bimini tops don't help. In the summer toward the evening the sun coming in the sides can get pretty hot, especially when dealing with young kids on board.

We use these: http://www.biminiclip.com
you can clip towels or blankets to the bimini post on the sides. Works pretty well, but if wind is strong you may have to use 3 or 4 per towel to hold.
I think we ordered ours from Overtons.

If you use clips you could pick up some shade cloth to hang on the sun side or get enough for both sides, that way you can hang it off the front of the top in the wind has you facing the sun at anchor.

We just went to the kmart/sears in the home fixit part and bought some big plastic clamps (they were in the tool section at the kmart) and hang towels up, clamp at top and loose on the bottom so the breeze can still get in. Price of the clamp was 2.00 bucks.

My wife and I found some shade cloth to match the color of the boat, she sewed some fabric that matched the trim of the boat as well to the edged of the cloth, I then bought some plastic squeeze clamps at lowes and we just clip them up if needed. Best thing is we cut the cloth to fit perfectly the areas we wanted to hang it in, the sides and back. Works great...

We do the clamps too. We use them to clam up a garbage bag, I clamp my hat to the hard top when I'm underway so it doesn't blow off my head, clamp towels for shade, fishing poles, you name it. I bought a dozen of them from Harbor Freight for like .69 a piece.
