storeage cost
Hey guys, kinda bored, thought I'd generate alittle conversaton about boat storeage costs. I currently have my benny in a storeage facility here in Louisiana, monthly cost is 85.00 a month. At first I thought that was pretty cheap, but know I know why.. First of all, it's all the way across town and second of all, spacing is tight.. Picture a building with 3 sides and a roof, boats parked diagonally on both sides, with steel poles separating each storeage space. The distance from one side to the other side is ok ( alittle narrow ), but when there are boats parked across from me, and you factor in the polls, it makes it kinda difficult getting the boat backed in because those poles are behind you as you back up, and of course you have to be careful not to hit the poles on the other side of the floor as you manuever your vehicle... anyway, found another place today much more convenient to my home and all the spaces are like individual garages.. roll up door, back your boat in, shut and padlock the door and don't have to worry about anyone messing with your boat. Space is big enough for my little pontoon, 12 x 30. Cost: $115 a month. Does not include electric. I'm in Louisiana, my son has a rental space in Texas, his is $130 a month. Just curious what storeage facilitys around the country are getting these days.... When you think about it, they've got a pretty good deal going there, once they get the facility up and provide some sort of security ( be it electronic gates and or cameras ) they basically just sit back and count the money..I know the placw where my boat is right now has 4 or 5 buildings on thier compound and most are 80% full....

Re: storeage cost
For the winter (Nov till March 30) I stored it at the fairgrounds for $276. During the summer I put it in a covered slip (2900 including 2 dock boxes)
While the slip is a little pricey it pays for itself in increased boat usage and convenience.
Before the slip I stored in a secured lot (fenced and locked and in easy sight of a busy road) for $25 per month.

I put our toon in a slip from April through the end of Oct. During the winter, i turn it into a giant 'Tent' so the snow will slide off, and then push it into my backyard where it sleeps through the winter.
Ive checked around abit and to put it into a garage for the winter is about $175 a month.
Outside storage is about $80 a month.
Im cheap, and decided to go with the 'tent' idea instead! Gotta save up beer money somehow!

I curious about the details of your fairgrounds storage. I'm the president of our local Kiwanis Club and we run the county fair. The county owns the fairgrounds but we lease it from them. We have covered space that could be used for boat storage. The building is about 250X40. I'm thinking we could rent storage space to make some extra money for our club. How do they determing what you pay? Is it by foot? Also whats in the fine print.....are they repsonsible for damage? Any insurance requirements? Any info you have would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: storeage cost
In 2008 we had 3 trips planned to Table Rock Lake, which is about 4.5 hours from home within a months period. We decided instead of toting the pontoon back and forth we would rent a larger storage unit. We looked around and found one near by that fit our needs. It was around $145 for the month (South West Missouri). It was worth it for us, no wear and tear on the boat and trailer and saved fuel plus the worry and fuss of towing it that far.
We now have lake property about 15 minutes from home so we just tow back and forth, the boat stays in its own house now.

It is a metal carport - 10X 31 was $1800 installed. Will probably enclose 3 sides this fall to have better protection.
(Front and rear gates are left open to allow air to flow to help keep down the mold)

Re: storeage cost
It cost us $875 from November to May. It includes the dealer taking the boat out and back to the dealership for storage (both ways), winterization, and shrinkwrap. They have to trailer the boat about 75 miles one way (I have a 10 ft wide boat and didn't get a trailer as you need wide load permits in Michigan).

Re: storeage cost
It cost $560 for haulout, launch in spring, winterization, blocks, shrink wrap, and outdoor storage for the winter. I drive boat to marina and they do the rest. That is for a 25ft boat
I did find out our fairgrounds has indoor storage for a lot less, they sell it by the foot. it is about 260 bucks for a 28-30 foot boat.... they include the trailer tongue. But it has to be on a trailer, and I do not own a trailer

Re: storeage cost
In the charlotte area on the south end of Lake norman I pay a little over $1800 a year for in/out storage with unlimited launches throughout the year (Westport Marina). I also have access to 8 first come, first serve wet slips if I want to leave it in the water for a couple of days. Real friendly folks there. It's also a full service marina w/ gas, service shop and parts department.

Re: storeage cost
Hey guys... admittedly I'm not the best at backing up a boat and trailer, but I have come across an enclosed 12 x 30 storeage site for 115 a month, the normal rate around here is 135 for that size unit.. my concern on this particular site is that the door opening is only 10 feet wide, the boat is 8 1/2 plus about another 1/2inch off each side where the fender on the trailer sticks out just a bit... so basically I would backing a boat and trailer that's 8 feet 7 inches wide into a 10 foot hole, leaving me a total of 1 foot 5 inches, or about 8 1/2 inches on each side.. will be cramped inside as well, space is 30 feet long, back of the motor to the tip of the trailer is 29'1". Oh, just as long as you can shut the door right?

The opening in my gate when i push mine into my back yard is about 10 foot wide.
Its a tight fit, but if you go SLOW, and have someone guiding you, it's doable.

Evansville Indiana - $100 / month year 'round in-building storage. Facility shares ramp with marina, and they put in / take out when I call ahead using a transient slip. Boat stays cleaner, and more secure in their building than in a slip all season.

Re: storeage cost
We do outdoor, but chainlinked, with razor wire concrete parking lot storage for $30 a month. Not a bad price, considering it's within 2 blocks of the only station in town that I can fill up the truck, and the toon at the same time, and it is less than 1 block away from a carwash, and 2 major highways. We never have to go far to get on the road to any of the 3 lakes we frequent.
The down side, is a winter like this last one, when we have over 3" of snow SEVERAL times, and I have to go knock the snow off of the cover so it doesn't streatch or tear it.
