Dexter EZ Lube Axles

#1 Post by GXPWeasel » Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:15 am

Anyone else have them?
This is what I have, and as far as I can tell, they must be a sealed bearing.... I hope not, as I've never had good luck with sealed bearings, but if so, then I'll live with it. What do you think? I can't find anywhere to grease them, unless this little black cover pops off????

pull that black dust cover off, the zerk fitting is right behind it and pumps the old grease out when you shoot the new in.

I have them on my atv trailer.
Yes the black piece pops out and there is a grease fitting behind it.
You jack the trailer up and add grease while rotating the wheel, it has worked great on the atv trailer so far.

Yep the old buddy bearing didn't have the cover, you could just about tell their condition by looking at the plate behind the spring. Guess they don't make them like that now. Utility an boat trailer has the cover. How often or miles do you guys grease them. I ask because either the utility or boat had not traveled far (can't remember which) but decided to check anyway an it took about 6 pumps of grease and sure I had not went much over 150 miles round trip since the last lube. May be mistaken an didn't lube both trailers which is what I do now when I get out the grease gun.

I grease mine every spring, at the same time I grease all the suspension pivot points.

If I don't see any water come out of mine I do it once a year and take the covers off and check them real quick after a few launches plus I touch my bearings housing for heat when I get to the ramp

Thanks for the info. guys. My dad actually happened to stop by shortly after I posted, and he just pulled the cover off without even asking. He said " Are you going to grease your trailer wheels" ? I say, " Well yea, if I can figure out how to". Then he showed me. I guess I need to have a little more faith in myself, and just start pulling covers off...

Only 1 pump, and nice clean grease came back out the backside. I gues I'm good to go. :alright

So, I'm now headed to the lake with the little girl for the first time. Just going to the local lake (pond really) in case she's fussy, and we need to come back home. It's only a 10 minute drive accross town. Wish me luck, and I'll take pictures.

IMPORTANT!
Just remember, when pumping grease into the buddies, go reeeal slow. Otherwise its easy to blow out the back seal and end up all over your breaks n stuff....

Me either, lol. Went fishing last Thursday evening in the middle Chesapeake. Fantastic trip, filled the cooler. :alright

Coming home (It's 1 1/2 hours to home)...I notice my volt gauge drop to zero :x I figure the boat's got 2 batteries I can swap if needed, so what I have is a dead alternator. I got 6 miles from home and my truck died from lack of battery voltage. Swapped one battery from the boat, she fired right up and I got home with no problems.

Tested the alternator, and it was dead as I suspected (first one in 131,000 miles). Replace it start 'er up and there's a hell of a noise coming from the A/C compressor. Note that the A/C was working fine and never made a sound...prior to removing the belt.

So...I remove the A/C compressor clutch to find this:

Run to Autozone, replace the (sealed) bearing and it's good as new. :rofl :rofl

That's usually what goes bad on an A/C compressor clutch. That Northern Tool shop press has paid for itself over and over :)
