Trailor ?'s

#1 Post by shootandfish1 » Thu Jan 22, 2009 8:24 pm

Thanks to everyone who responded to my first post. You all have made me most welcome. Sorry it took me a couple of days to get back.

Following up with some trailor ?'s.

I have assumed that scissor trailors were a bad idea for anything but very short distances and you had to keep the speed very slow in curves. I had planned on avoiding these at all costs with one exception. If I was to obtain a 'project' pontoon requiring lots of repair- then a scissor trailor would be good thing to have.

At what length do most pontoon trailors come with a second axle? I can't recall seeing a single axle trailor hauling a toon, but I don't see a lot of pontoons on the road. For safty, I would want a tandem axle and I would like the option to haul camping gear, ect. on the deck.

Brakes- Looking at internet adds, when brakes are mentioned, they are always surge brakes. I'm assuming (again) that electric trailor brakes and water do not mix.

Thanks again-Fred

Mike ----is your tow vehicle front wheel drive? Setup looks nice and level---wonder what your tongue wt is and how your tow vehicle handles the toon---towing, stopping, boat ramps, etc.

PS----we all hate you for living in such a beautiful state. Made the Snake River drive from Jackson Hole last year in September when the leaves were changing---walked down to the river in several places----stunningly beautiful...

Thanks - This is exactly the type of info that I am looking for.

Herb- I see you are in Orlando. I know what you are talking about. I spent several months there the last 2 years and the toll roads are indeed a pain. Next trip I am getting a E-pass!!

Anyway, you probably know one of my favorite fishing holes- The St. James River. I have rented toons from Highland, Houghntoon (spelling?), and High Banks. I really like the Wekiva River that feeds into the St. James at High Banks.

As I elaborate in future posts on my notion of the perfect fishing machine, you will first-hand knowledge of the type of water I plan on going.

Mike - I see that your trailer is galvanized. I saw a lot of these in Florida, but not here in Kentucky. Are there any negatives of having galvanized? For a used boat, I assume that one pretty well is stuck with what is with the boat, but for a new boat I would think that galvanized is the way to go.

OK your close it's the St John's, our north running river and there many good sites and fishing as you can go all the way to Jacksonville on that river to the sea.

What part of Kentucky are you in, I was born Mayking and we have a reunion every July there.

Yea if your going to be here a while it pays to have the e-pass or sunpass either one, I had e-pass since they started it and glad now you can handle your account on line, I use to have to drop a check off at the office as they love to over charge your credit card or at least use too.

My brother is 40 minutes away by the pay roads but it's a 5.50 dollar round trip, ad the trailer and you double it with a single axle trailer, i seen a guy with a 4 axle trailer he was paying more than tractor trailers.

This was a one time only situation back when we had a travel trailer that had to be pulled by our truck. I took out both back row seats and didnt put anything extra in the toon or the minivan. It rode very nice, stopped easy and never got squirlly up or down some pretty good sized hills! The ody has a 3500lb rating, I was probably on the edge of that...

Once at our destination (lake cascade) we setup the trailer and used the truck to launch it!

Now we have a nice little class c that will pull the toon just fine so we dont need to be doing that crazy shuffle anymore...

And yes, Idaho has some amazing beauty but cant compare to where I grew up in Kenai, Alaska! :nana

I dont see any downside to a galvanized trailer other than possibly up front cost. I have never had my toon in salt water so it may not be necessary but this is the trailer it came with when I bought it (used). I was surprised that it didn't have any trailer brakes and have considered putting on a set for liability's sake but have not done so yet!

AMEN! to Kenai. Rented a motorhome in Anchorage in May '05.. Made the Kenai, Soldotna, Homer drive. Fished the Kenai for King salmon(struck out but didnt care) Then went thru Waslia(hi Gov Palin) to Talkeetna then to Denali Nat'l Park. Saw Denali/McKinley for 3 days straight---absolutely incredible adventure. I recommend it to all of you---do it if you can...

Want to go back and take the Denali glacier landing trip out of Talkeenta. Maybe go to Fairbanks or spend more time around Wrangel and Seward.

If I decide to fish I'll prob go in September and fish the Kenai for Rainbows and catch the fall salmon run...

Wow, thats cool! I bet you had fun!! So much to see, you did it right.. Next time go get a halibut charter out of homer and get yourself a 300lb halibut!

Growing up, my dad was a fishing guide on the kenai river for many years, I have pulled out many salmon (king, silver, red, pink) over the years...

If you going to go back to fish the kenai river, ABSOLUTELY go the end of July and hit the red salmon run... Thats the only time I will go back and the only river fish I want to catch... An hour on the bank when they are in will net you 20-30 on the line.

Our spring striper season is coming late March, need to get out and reel in some of these:

As for galvanized trailers, Mike is right. The upfront cost is higher, but that's about it. Non galvanized steel trailers don't last very long in these parts, 4-5 years tops in saltwater.

The aluminum trailer for my Starcraft is 41 years old this year, and while all the steel hardware has since been replaced, the aluminum is near perfect.

Herb- Not sure if I am doing the quote function correctly- Please bear with me.

I currently live in Harrodsburg, about 1 hr. SW of Lexington. Grew up in Monticello, near Somerset next to Lake Cumberland.

Can't believe I messed up the name of the St. John- I have a lot of good memories there.
