My brand new engine just blew up.

#1 Post by gramps » Tue Apr 03, 2012 2:58 pm

Well after waitinf for over 2 Months for our new 150hp Mercury 4 Stroke it is shot.

The dealer was lake testing the rig, as they do with all their new boats and when they put it in gear it blew a hole out the side.
Mercury told them not to touch the motor as they were sending people out to look at it. Everyone is in shock, I just hope it's a freak thing and not a problem with this motor.

They said that they were rushing a new motor to the dealer for me, I told the dealer that they should ask Mercury to give me a full 5 year warranty, not the 2/5 that is now offered.
They are calling me back tomorrow to let me know what the Merc. Rep has to say about the reason why the motor blew.

Obviously I'm bummed.

On the bright side it happened to the dealer and not you. Hope you get a new one quick.

Sorry to hear that! You don't suppose someone from Mercury did not like your "Mercury will have many upset customers" thread and decided to get you, do you? :scared

So sorry to read about this gramps :( . You've been waiting longer than I'm a member here and I know you were waiting patiently for it. This sucks BIG TIME, but as LocoCoco said it's good it happened to the dealer and NOT you.

I'm with you...5-year warranty. Push for it :thumbsup :thumbsup

They are sending a new motor ASAP, supposedly in a couple of days. There are other people on here who own that motor and are very happy with it.

Maybe my other thread on unhappy customers is bitting me in the A$$, LOL!
I'm sure it will all work out.

I hope you get it quick. Everything I have read from owners of that motor has been very positive. Hopefully your experience will be the same.

Wow...I'm curious what caused that. Good luck with the new motor.

Have you been over to see it. Pictures would be an interesting thing to post here. Like the others said, it is a good thing the dealer blew it up. If it happened a week later they might not be as accommodating about getting a new motor. I have heard horror stories about things like this where they just try to fix your motor.
In fact the 40HP that was on my Harris when I got it was one of those motors (before I bought it).
I found out later from a mechanic who recognized the boat/motor that Mercury danced those people around for years. It was eating drive shafts. In the end it was a bad casting on the leg that they finally replaced.
I knew something was up when I went into the foot and everything looked like it had been apart and put back together a lot.
It was a pretty rare model (402) and while I was looking for parts I ran into the mechanic who found the bad leg.

Ron, I hope to find out tomorrow what caused it. Mercury didn't want the dealer touching the motor as I was told that they were upset to hear about a new motor blowing a hole in the block.
I'll let everyone know the outcome, if they let me know.
