Is 54 lbs of thrust and 48" the right size for a 20' pontoon ?
I realize 'bigger is better", but is it enough for calm conditions ?
If I put one on my 24 ft Suntracker would y'all suggest I go bigger ?
Looks like at about 60 lbs of thrust you're looking at 24 V systems.
Looks like a great price !
I think you will have enough power in calm conditions, but I would check your distance from the top of your deck to the water line. You are going to probably loose about a foot of shaft lenth on the top for the bracket and should be at least a foot below the surface with your prop on the bottom. 48" shaft may not quite do it, but I would measure to be sure, and I am thinking that with much chop at all, it may pull your prop out of the water.
For the 24' I would definititly go 54 or 60" shaft and 70lb (24V) thrust. It is a few more bucks for the co-pilot or I-pilot but well worth it IMO, if you do a lot of trolling.

Thanks a bunch for all the answers. I am thinking maybe I will wait about trolling motor to see if I really want one on this boat or just how I want to mount it. I think the motor I had found was a great deal but another will come along. Lightly used stuff and cash at the right time can make deals.

Moving from a fish&ski, I had a strong need for a trolling motor and a depth finder. The latter was easy, but trolling motors for pontoons were more of a challenge. I went pontoon as I live on a lake and always taking people out for rides and the old bowrider just wasn't very comfortable. But I still wanted to get out and fish every so often. The retractable bow mount looked good but I didn't want to leave any plates on the floor that someone would trip or stub a toe on. The front gate gets used a lot for swimming exits. Hand tillers are good, but mounting with a quick release was a challenge too.
Closest one I found was the MinnKota Pontoon Hand Control Trolling Motor with a 55# thrust. I could mount it off center and still not hamper the use of the front gate. With a little modding, I used a bow mount plate and now it comes off and back on in 2 minutes. Easy and when removed, not much is left behind. For my 18 footer, 55# is plenty to horse the boat around shallow areas. Still a chore in the wind, but the boat is anything but stealth. Here's a couple pics to give an idea of my solution. The mount is an Attwood Corporation 5000 Troll-Lock.
Hope this helps!

I have a 75 lb 24 v Motorguide on my 20' boat. We live in a windy area and this has served us well. One thing I opted for is the motor with a remote control. Using the remote enables you to be anywhere on the pontoon and still have control. It is a little handheld remote on a cord you can clip on your shirt...comes in very handy.
As far as trailering, the unit can be easily unlatched from the mount to be totally out of the way.
