More pontoon shine questions

#1 Post by Mr Geets » Sun Aug 19, 2012 5:27 pm

After a dozen freshwater outings my pontoons are starting to look ugly (cloudy, angled water line, dark shading). I like the sound of Sharkhide. My question is final appearance. In the video they look more like an shiny off white (???) rather than a mirror finish that I am looking for. Do I have to buff the tubes to get super shiny?

Yes, you will have to buff ( polish ) them to get them to look shiny. Sharkhide will keep them looking the same as they were when you put it on. We had ours Sharkhided when new and they still look that way. Our toon is a 2012 model and I will probably put a coat on every year to be on the safe side.
I'm very happy wiith the results.

I'll be putting my new boat on the trailer @ 20 hrs.--8 from now--and will take time to polish and Sharkhide. I'll also change the fluids at that time.

I couldn't get over how fast a boat fabricated in May would start to tarnish.

Thanks for info guys. I am thinking the rubbing compound buff job and wax sealer. Yes I was disappointed the appearance would tarnish so quickly too.

I would be hesitant to go the rubbing compound route, as the stuff is pretty abrasive. The aluminum is pretty soft stuff. I'm going to get aluminum paste polish.

I was going thru my big standup tool chest last night, and came up with a Fizz polishing ball that goes on an electric drill. I'll try see if it'll do the job before resorting to applying polish by hand. The insides and outsides of three toons are a lot of elbow grease.

The worse part is getting all of the black tarnish off. It'll take many, many towels and much lacquer cleaner.

Search "polishing and sharkhiding" for my step by step post. Gives you all the information you need. August edition of Pontoon and Deckboat published my article, as well.
Best suggestion, use the Sharkhide products. They work the best.

I got a refund check from PDB right after they banned me. I had renewed for a year so I called them and told them they can have their rag. Lol.
