Have questions and need ideas/ pics about tri tooning.

#1 Post by k5guy38 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 8:16 pm

I have a 20' 1975 harris float boat that is fully readone with a 85 hp johnons on the back. The boat has two 19" toons under it currently and I am unhappy with the way it sits in the water. I handles ok but it seems the rear of the logs are under water almost all the way under full throttle. I have played with the trim with no sucess. So my neighbor has a 20' 19" toon he is willing to sell me for a song and dance. :nana The biggest question is do I mount this at full length and build the tail end of it into a trassom to hold the motor ? If I move the motor back 12" to 18" because of adding the full log what will that do to my handleing ? I have the tools and the skills to mod the log. I guess Im just wondering what others have done. Thanks in advance Denny.

I would add guy log and set back a little ,,that is what on gonna do if I can find a log , I am also going to lower center tube about 2 " for better handling..but by adding tube and no more hp it will slow u down cause of more drag

Well right now the boat is over power :biggrin2 and not really looking for more speed. Just want it to get out of the water a little higher. The log is the same length as what I have now. Should I shorten it a little ? or just put it on.

I would just put it on ,full length ,,,but then u will need to turn rear of log to accept motor ...I have seen people put on shorter ones in front of transom but seems like waste

Run full length and add transom to sit back. When I added my center tube from the manufacturer, they made it to sit back a good foot and a half more than the original transom.

It actually makes the boat handle a little better. Engine may sit a little lower. Might want to raise it a notch or two on the transom.

Get ahold of Liquid Asset here, he did exactly what you want to do. It turned out absolutely amazing.

I have 1986 24' harris with 19'' toons with a 85 force, my rear also was low in the water just as you described. I put a 24" 15' long center toon on mine with a built in motor mount on the rear. Your toons shouid extend back about 24" past the end of the deck as mine do? My motor mount is flush with the other two toons, zero issues. No diffrence up or down with the steering, the only diffrence is I'm about 5-6 inches higher that before, and no more sagging tubes as you described it. The only thing I would say is to think about going with a larger toon in the middle, as long as you do not have trailer issues? I wished I did a 3rd toon years ago now, and you live in the right area to get them cheap, and low shipping costs.
Good luck

This is how I did it. With smaller logs you can't just build a transom onto the end of the log like the newer style boats. Your motor would end up sitting way to low in the water. I bought a stripped boat for $400 and actually just sold the second log last summer for $250 so the log was the cheapest part for me. I did buy a new manitou transom from pontoon specialists. My center log is mounted 2" lower than the outter logs.

all welded up ready for the new deck. My boat had 2 gas tanks that were ontop of the logs but I added crossmembers and a new rear deck in it's place.

There is more info and pics in my full rebuild thread over at the pontoonstuff forum.
