Eek! Cheapo Underskinning...
I paid about $100 for a 50 foot roll of Aluminum flashing (24" wide, by maybe 0.019 thick?), and I underskined the boat with about 5 aluminum pop-rivets per c-channel.
This last few days, I tested it out. Holy CATS it's a LOT quieter at full throttle!
Also, on Monday we got into a massive storm (for the Rockies). Zero visibility and 3+ foot waves breaking over the fence. A half hour of navigation by GPS because we couldn't see any shore. LIfting up, and slamming down into the water.
The cheapo aluminum held up great! It was a real risk, but it looks like it's going to work out! Time will tell.

Interesting. Are you talking like aluminum trim coil from the big box lumber stores? That's what I used to redo my fencing, but it seems fragile. I get nervous every time the two knuckleheads are wrestling around it. I'd like to underskin, but the aluminum has always been a bit pricey. If that's sturdy enough, that's a great option.BobG wrote:I paid about $100 for a 50 foot roll of Aluminum flashing (24" wide, by maybe 0.019 thick?), and I underskined the boat with about 5 aluminum pop-rivets per c-channel.

I think the coils are also available in .024 but maybe not at the big box.

I used to coil stuff from homedepot on my rails and it's reall fragile but if your using the same stuff for under skinning and you say it works I'll give it a try

Yeah, it's alarmingly thin. I just thought I'd give it a shot, and because the distance between my toons is about 21 inches, I just curled it up long-ways, threaded it in there, and pushed it up into place, and put three rivets into the cross-member, and one into the toon hanger bracket on each side, with extra rivets into the toon hangers between the channels (so every foot).

"Hard water" up here means the ice fishing season. I admit it. I have no idea what he meant by hard water.

Maybe it is just my extremely vivid imagination...finding humor where none exists.
We may never know if jimrs doesn't feel the need to clarify.
I'm gonna stick to my guns and say that there was a joke in there somewhere
