Going from one battery to two

#1 Post by Wishing » Mon Jun 02, 2014 2:15 pm

What does this involve? You can talk to me like I'm 4, because that's about my knowledge level.

I believe our boat is made for two (we were told it was). There're spots for 2, but only one in there. I do NOT see the connections for another though. We do have the switch on the console for it.

We don't have a sound system with a giant power amp, and there's no trolling motor on my boat.

I prefer to use a single auto style battery. They last so much longer in marine use, and are just a better all round value if you don't need the deep cycle functions of a trolling motor battery.

If you go two batteries, you need at the least to have a Perko battery isolator (switch) installed.

My PowerStroke diesel pickup has two batteries, and it cost me almost $400 to change them earlier this year. I don't need two more batteries to replace in the future.

If I knew who to credit for this picture, I would. I may have just found it on the internet, but I don't remember. Good luck to you. (We have a second battery and glad we do.)

It's fairly simple to add the 2nd battery (as shown in the picture). You can also add a Voltage Sensitive Relay to ensure you'll always have starting power. This may not be a big deal if you don't run much of anything on your boat. I went ahead and did it just to be safe.

here's the VSR / Switch setup I purchased.

I have the same system as fergusmj has and love it. Seems like the way to go, :2cents had mine since the beginning on this boat.
