Getting carpet glue off

#1 Post by wijames » Mon Aug 11, 2014 8:18 am

I just removed my lot carpet to replace it but a lot of the old glue is left. Does anyone know how to get it off without damaging the deck? The owner of my marina said he believes the glue they use is an epoxy glue that soaks into the floor so he doesn't think I can get it off. Ideas?

Roger that. Its worth the rental fee if you have more than a half-sheet of ply to sand off.

Tried to rent a floor sander and it broke before I even got started. I wonder if maybe I could pressure wash the deck to get the residue off?

I would not pressure wash the plywood to get the residue off... I don't think it would actually wash the glue away and it would be a crying shame if you blasted some of the wood away attempting it. Then you would have a different and much worse problem. Just my humble opinion. Good luck.

I tried a belt sander, heat gun, and all kinds of scrapers. Finally just covered it with new carpet. Out of sight out of mind.

The floor sander is the best method . Power washing ruins wood. I love watching people take 2500 psi to a deck and chewing the wood apart l.o.l. I work for a wood floor company and we sand glue off of old floors all the time. You need a rough paper and it will load up quickly depending on the type of glue. The small drum sanders at rental shops will get the job done it just takes longer. Don't worry about doing a perfect sand job since it's just going to be covered with glue and carpet again.

I used my black & decker hand held power planer and planed the glue off.
