Near miss

#1 Post by tuned » Sun May 31, 2015 1:27 am

I have boated under this rail bridge many times, as one of my favorite lake pubs lies about a block further upstream. It burned this Memorial Weekend. No people or fish were harmed.

Busiest International Rail crossing in the north is now out of commission. I passed under this trestle about a day before it went down.

The story that I got:
No one knows how the fire started. Likely either sparks from a train or malicious kids. The trains are very long. When the train came around a corner, the engineer saw the fire and hit the emergency brake. As it takes a great distance to stop, the engine and a bunch of cars rolled right through the fire before stopping. Terrifiying :scared

They stopped with about the middle of the train still on the bridge. Rather than risk further cars (some are tankers full of who knows what), they unhooked from lead end and pulled the remaining cars away. Another engine came and dragged the tail section backwards and the three cars were left. I think they had determined that those particular cars left to burn were not hazardous.

The train traffic has definitely slowed by my place because of it, which is fine with me :smoke

Better sleep fast, Lee. I drove by there yesterday and they are already hard at work on it.

Wow. Who woulda thought a train trestle fire could cut off your boat trip to the pub?

Highly improbable.

As the Sicilyan on The Princess Bride would put it: "Incontheivable" :biggrin2
Now I only have six pubs left to choose from. Unfortunately they are spread over four hundred square miles of water

Ha Ha Ha!!! We were visiting family around Manitowoc, WI several years ago, and the local news was all about the "Culture of Drinking" in Wisconsin. We just laughed, until we saw a guy in the restaurant order a Bud with his breakfast. :paranoid

Almost as good as the Tequila and eggs I had in Vegas at six in the morning last year. I ran into two Samoans, didn't understand a word they said. We all decided we were hungry....and thirsty.

Beer and Pizza is still the perfect breakfast.

It's not a "culture of drinking" It's just Wisconsin culture. I'm from Milwaukee originally (although I haven't lived there in many years) and when I go back to visit it's still beer with every meal and for every event.
