Hydro Steering

#1 Post by devdwt » Mon Jun 01, 2015 6:31 am

My steering has been getting stiffer and it was getting to be a PITA.......
So I bit the bullet and got the Baystar kit off Ebay......... http://www.ebay.com/itm/161219792846?

Started Sat. morning at about 10:00AM .......by 1:00 PM we were headed to the lake....
Damn!............night and day difference.

This kit fit my rig like glove........Really high precision assembly.....very easy to install (after fighting to get the old cable steering off...cut-off wheel was VERY effective!)

Sorry............I only got one pic...view from the top......the lines with the braided covers go to the steering cylinder.
Made a big loop for clearance as they move side to side.....a little pricey.......but very happy....... wish I had done it when I got the toon..!

With my "roving" tennis elbow (moves from right arm to left arm occasionally) it's much better.
Not "one-finger" like a power assist with a pump, but effortless and the motor will not move from torque if you let go of the wheel....My Benny steering wheel bolted right on too.

Yes, It makes a big difference! I wish we had hydraulic steering years ago when we ran big outboards on our little 16' Checkmates. Break a steering cable at 80 plus and see what happens....
Had the SeaStar on the Manny, huge difference.

I love the baystar system that came on our boat, but beware, rodents love to eat into the hoses. At least in east Tennessee they do.

The braided covers are a great idea! I installed my own system and didn't use a cover but I can see where that would be a good idea!

I had one hose snap off this weekend, no place to get replacements locally, so a friend and I jury rigged it with some brass couplings and a piece of flex hydro hose, just to run a couple miles to the ramp. I don't know how they connect the couplings, we just faked it. Now gotta shop for new hose.
