What gauge is this? Manufacturer?

#1 Post by rsscoggins » Thu Jun 02, 2016 6:50 pm

Well picked up the boat today and got it home and noticed that there is no hour meter. Well hell - I like hour meters so I know when to do maintenance and can tell how many hours we put on the boat a year. I normally do my own maintenance so going to the dealer (1 hour away) just to have him read the hours on the boat (and paying for it) isn't my idea of fun.

On my Eliminator, I just replaced the Autometer Tach with one that had an hour meter - problem solved and I could tell that it was an AUTOMETER gauge because evidently they are proud and had it written on the background!

So on my Sylvan, it has a tach like the one picture (it is an actual picture). I called Sylvan and they said "we can not disclose our vendors" and I was like REALLY? All I have to do is pull the tach and look at the back (I did and it didn't say). Do you guys know who makes this so I can order the one with the Hour Meter?

I'm sorry, I can't reveal their vendor, either.

Is this it? Most manufacturers seem to be using generic teleflex or Faria gauges if they don't use a motor manufacturer's gauge. I think my new boat has the same gauges as a friend's Tahoe Pontoon.

Don't think that one is it - it has a black center on the dial and mine is silver. It also has black on the outside of the gauge where mine is silver.

That looks like it - this is a used/take off gauge from GLS unfortunately. No return, no warranty. I searched by that part number 780218PDFB and haven't come up with anything - looks like Teleflex may have a vendor only line of gauges, maybe.

Just search tachometer hour meter and there are others. All of their stuff is oem overstock so it should be good. The guys at teleflex are good guys so you might try giving them a call tomorrow. They helped a friend when he was looking for an obsolete steering cable.

I'd take a look under the dash to see if the existing gauge has the same adjustment (s) and plug; I think the chances are high that it does and it will be a simple plug-n-play move. Your other options are to just get a stand-alone hour meter and install or an engine manf gauge if offered. Mercury has a line of plug-n-play multi purpose gauges that read the available info right from the ECM so you can have upwards of a dozen or more parameters read from a single gauge.

I made a few calls this morning.

I called V3 gauges in Florida and gave her that part number from GLS - she stated that was a Bennington part number and had to be ordered from Bennington. She said a lot of the pontoon boat manufacturers utilize a line of gauges that are not available through the general public and must be ordered through the dealer.

I called GLS (Great Lakes Skipper) and he confirmed the gauge on their website is from a Bennington. I send a picture of mine and he is comparing to the actual gauge.

I called the dealer to see if they could get me a price of one from Sylvan.

We'll see on the costs - I might just end up popping a hole and putting a stand alone hour meter in the lower part of the dash pod below the throttles. I can add one of those for about $50.

Image

I prefer the one in the tach because it only registers hours when the motor is running where as the stand alone one registers when the key is on - only a problem if someone turns on the key and forgets about it

I believe that some of the NEMA 2000 depth finder/GPS units include an hour meter function, plus you can get a custom display of a number of different engine functions.

The Teleflex linked above is described as for an inboard/outboard.

Well the dealer made it easy for me - they called Sylvan and their cost is $323! Sells fro $415 or so at MSRP. I called another dealer to confirm! That is why they are so protective of who makes them! That is why they have the "vendor only" line, so they can bend you over! That is highway robbery when you can get one of their consumer models for less than $150!

I spoke to the folks at GLS and sent them a picture of mine. To them it appears to be the same but the connector on mine is rectangular and the one on theirs is square. Both are 4 pins and I could swap the connectors but in the end, I am just going to pop a hole in the lower dash console and put a stand alone hour meter. I really just want it for maintenance purposes to be able to track run time.

I also couldn't find an exact match on my hour gauge but, this one at around $50 works fine. Hour gauges should be included on the boat...

At first all I wanted was an hour meter so I simply Google searched for hour meters and found a company that sold them as well as other gauges etc. I purchased a simple analog unit that actually still ticked like a real clock/watch would. Works great no problems at all. When I switched motors from the 60 to the 75 which is worlds quieter the first think I noted was that at speed of 1K RPM or less if the music is not playing even my old engineer's ears can hear the bugger tick.... I've since installed a SmartCraft gauge which reads direct from the ECM so I can/could remove the hour meter from the dash. Truthfully I'd like to find a simple dial face clock to put in its place or at the most a digital clock with a stopwatch feature.

My dealer flipped through his catalog and ordered a 'black' faced gauge without my approval. Lucky I called ahead of time to let him know I wanted a gauge to match the others or, at least close to it. Mine is a Teleflex or it may be SeaStar as in the link below. The link doesn't show the chrome/nickle plate bezel though. There is a good looking Faria gauge in the link. I think the Faria looks a bit better. Hope this helps.
