DIY wood consol
Being the times the way they are I have decided to fabricate a wooden consol, that and the fact that a good friend had a bunch of 1/2" sheets which he was happy to donate to the project.
I was thinking I would just make a copy of the standard type but then I realized I have enough material to make a seat/cooler/live well in front of the consol.
Would anyone have a picture of there DIY consol or a link to good DIY project consol?

This won't help a lot - but it will give you an idea of what can be done with the guts from an an old one.
I made it much smaller than the original, since there was a lot of storage space that I didn't need.
The wood was toast, so I completely rebuilt it with 5/8' Meranti - and reinforced it big time since it is designed to hinge out of the way. I used a high quality water proof glue, screws and wood gussets, steel angle plates. The "marine" carpet was from Home Depot, spray glued and stapled in place. It was 100% poly-olefin loop - MUCH higher quality than typical fare.
You'll definitely need a table saw to get accurate cuts.

I made this one, it is fiberglass over plywood with an 18 gallon fuel tank in the front seat.

You're using a dog for a foot rest? Is nothing sacred?

Here's mine. Might be a bit fancier than you're thinking about!

I have room underneath for a 5-day cooler, miscellaneous "lunch" objects, the stereo receiver and the wiring connections.
Good Luck with your console project.

Re: DIY wood consol
That is a nice consol and it does give me some ideas and I like the idea of a gas tank in the front seat.
I had a chance to get over to my buddies to get a look see at the wood he was donating.
Wow 4 sheets of 36"x 72"x 1/2 white oak

I put my breakers in a waterproof "FS" box with a snap cover and all the wiring is in conduit under the boat. I had the wires behind the instrument laced into a neat cable but the first time I had to work on it (critter damage) I cut all the lacing and now it is that bird's nest.

Thats pretty amazing. It's like a pontoon boat mated with a classic wood Chris Craft and had a baby.WoodenPontoon wrote:Here's mine. Might be a bit fancier than you're thinking about!

Re: DIY wood consol
Thanks for the compliments on my console and wiring. My brother gets all the credit for the wiring. He does marine electrical and electronic installations as his business.
Ron, I have many pictures on ths site under the Member's Photos forum. Look for "Wooden Pontoon Progress" or something like that.RonKMiller wrote:Wow, that's truly a work of art... more pictures please!

Re: DIY wood consol
Kewl, thanks. Always amazing to see what a true artisan is capable of.. my brother in law is a master wood worker, his latest project was an "antique" cradle made from old barn wood for his daughter. Sounds like it would be a disaster with splinters and all, but it belongs in a museum. A true heirloom - just like your boat.
