Anchoring?

#1 Post by Mr Geets » Wed May 09, 2012 5:19 pm

Looking for thoughts on anchor line attachement on my pontoon. Tube eyes, deck cleats, or ? I would use a Danforth anchor and 5:1 ratio. Plan to stay on boat overnight and do not want any surprises. Lake is 15 miles long and 5 miles wide and plan to stay in sheltered bay. Any suggerstions? Thx

Deck cleats bolted through the underdeck crossmembers is what I have.

I tie my anchor rope to the bow eye, that's in the center of the front of the boat. The eye that you use to winch your boat onto the trailer.

I installed 2 deck cleats (bow) a day after I bought my Party Cruiser. I use 1/2 inch dock line, so they had to be big enough for that size line.

Pull a bight of the rode through the bow eye and secure it to a cleat up on deck.
That way you are still using the center eye for the "pull point" and you have it secured at an easier place to get to.
That makes it easier if you want to adjust the length and when you want to pull the anchor the bight will pull free from the eye as soon as you release it from the cleat.

What kind of knot do you tie to the cleat? I typically secure the rode with a cleat hitch but not sure how that would work with a bight thru the bow eye. I really struggle with knot tying, so please be kind. Thanks.

I keep a good D-Clamp near my anchor. Like others, after dropping the hook in the water and making sure she bit, I'll fasten the D-Clamp to the trailer eye and run my line through it while still secured to the deck cleat.

I have a danforth anchor as my primary anchor with 12' of chain. The anchor was from my father's 36' Gibson Houseboat.... An anchor is one item where I prefer extreme overkill. Especially with this clay bottom in NC.
